I saw that the other day online.

Well, its looks in very good nick, so its a question of how long the 4.2 will last. Being the QP, we assume it has had a reasonably sensible life.

Now it the engine lasts say another 2 years, 30k miles, you can change that yourself for about £2.5k, but I fear its all the other stuff like steering rack, suspension, dif, gearbox, half shafts that would worry me.

So for me, its a big no no.

Does say mainly motorway miles , so my feeling is its probably had the equiverlant of a town running car doing 30K miles , the service sheets are up to scratch these lumps will be good for 140 plus easily , they are very robustly built and under powered for there size , the 430 pushes out 570bhp so the 4200 has loads there in reserve which means extended mileage in real terms providing its maintained correctly

You would have to look at it as work horse , another two years and 30K mileage will render it in the £15K range so long as you can offset that then in my book its a mo brainer , cant think of a better work horse

Hi Loz,are you then saying that the 4200 has the potential to produce 570BHP?

Of course , cant believe you have had a masser a few months and not realized what you have under the bonnet, Its the important part 75% of the 430 block , the forerunner of the F430 tried and tested in the 4200 before they stuck it in the F430

Of course they have slightly different heads , intake ECU and plenums but the basic block is the same only the stroke differs by 1mm , NO way was Ferrari ever going to give the full potential to Maserati , but rather used the Maserati funding from Fiat to Research and develop and produce the 430 engine , so thats what you have , a couple of german/american companies will covert to the same at a cost of around $15000 , so not cheap

But is this not software related then? i mean if its the same as the F430 then what would a chip upgrade offer?
(Just curios as it does not need to be any faster really)

Loz is indeed correct, and yes, Ferrari were never going to give Maserati the full engine. The extra displacement is negligable, probably slightly deeper heads or a thicker head gasket. The main difference is in the intake. The Maserati has a single plenum, the Ferrari has two, one per bank, meaning greater air flow. Couple this with the modified heads, and ecu and there is your extra 40-50% hp. There are also suggestions that the crank is different, but I am not so sure...I think its to keep the Ferrari fraternity happy:

Yeah, people are really put off by big miles on super saloons........they do need to be really.....really cheap..........make him and offer of 14K....even if the engine robust...you've the gearbox, pump and all the wear and tear stuff which would easily eat up 4/5/6/7K!

If you plan to keep this car and not sell it on in a year it could be a great bargain...Must say everytime I look at it my juices start to run as it looks in such great condition and as you say Frank high miles are not an issue these days......A big plus on this car is the one owner so I'm thinking lots of motorway miles so as long as it's well serviced and looked after it should be fine......I may be wrong it could have been arounf the ring 1000 times....
