Independent specialist or main dealer for servicing? Surrey based

All

I'm hoping I can get some more great advice from you on where I ought to be planning to take my car for servicing?

My car is a 2012 GranTurismo S Auto with MC Autoshift and Sports pack. So far it has been serviced exclusively by GrayPaul Nottingham at 12k (March 13), 24k (July 14), and at 28.5k (June 16).

I'm inclined to take it to Maranello Egham (so as to maintain its full Maserati history), but am interested in knowing whether anyone has recommendations for independents who they trust or people who I ought to steer well clear of?

For example, I know there's Autofficina in Epsom which is very close to me, and SMDG in Cranleigh?

Thanks in advance,

Jon

My recommendation is to go where you feel happy.

I have only ever used indies, Emblem in Poole and more recently Ftech in Exeter. For me it was not about saving a few £££ but how they responded to me and what they offered by way of support.

A main dealer has to pay for the totty on the desk, the marble floor and the pricy coffee etc...nkt to mention high tax on a prime site...but if they only have YTS mechanics with little experience you are just being ripped off.

I have seen far too many 3/4 year old air filters in cars with MD history to feel that they have a passion rather than a bottom line.

I have always had my Gransport serviced with Graypaul NOTTINGHAM, but this year I decided against £1000 pounds for what was essentially an oil and filters change.

Autofficina in Chessington just off the A3. Proper car guys who won't rip you off. They have been brilliant with my MCV and Ghibli.

Rule of thumb, main dealer for the first 3-5 years (or the warranty period) then specialist is wholly acceptable for the maintenance records.

Thanks Hilts - I'm based just outside Epsom, and drove past Autofficina today to see where it was. My car shouldn't need anything doing for a while, but I may well pop in and have a chat to get a feel for the place...

Check like for like pricing as main dealers aren't necessarily that much more expensive, especially if you supply your own oil etc.

Personally I'd have no issue buying a car that had used recognised specialists for servicing, BUT most people buying this sort of car will look favourably on FMSH. How favourably, who knows. May just make a car easier to move on (taking my old Aston as an example, it wouldn't have been taken in p/x without FAMSH, and the trade in price I received was strong).

Check the main dealer prices, I use Maranello and on their Monza deal they almost match an Indie. Interesting HR Owen in London seem even cheaper than Maranello, making me wonder if they are trying to get Surrey/Berkshire owners to take their cars a little further to be serviced.

I think the main thing with any of these guys is to turn up make it clear exactly what you want from them and what your expectations are. If they meet and/or exceed then great, if not maybe shop around?

But do they know anything about old bangers..3200's and 4200's.. the teches would have to be in there 40's to remember all that old stuff!....
Anyone bought up on the later QP's and Gran whatever you call them wouldn't have a clue!

I used to use HR Owen in London. Also Maranello in Egham.

In the end I now use Autofficina it was significantly cheaper but the service just as good.

I finally got round to popping in to Autofficina today and was very impressed. Lovely people, impressive set-up, and great service.

I will definitely be back.
