Hi I just joined the forum :)
I am thinking of selling my 2 cars and getting one great one hopefully a 4.2 GT I have noticed lots of cars around £30k mark with 40-50k miles but have seen them advertised for a long time , are they really hard to sell ? If i changed my mind a year or so down the line I do not want to be stuck with a car that is hard to move on ?
I had an Aston V8 Vantage that i sold 12 months ago bought for £30k and i was really lucky and sold for £32k very special car bur servicing horrendous i bought it 7 years old with only 28000 miles and the previous owner had spent £25k on services and it was due for a clutch ,tyres and another service £5500 !! So I sold it , bought an everyday car and a classic , but Now I want that special everyday car again . From what i gather the GTs are strong wear wise if i can get an indy service for £700ish and 20ish mpg I will be happy .
Just concerned at resale they have been around £30k for a while but looks like they maybe hard to sell even at that price ?
Advice experience gladly recieved ..

Carl

Welcome....(again).......I thing is a GT with that V8 will never be a fast seller but goods one do sell.......but as said it is a limited market....The GT is holding its value very well indeed. Now 9 years old and still good ones are over 30k......In a year will they drop much more.....Nasty examples yes but good ones may not drop much more in a year especially with no sign of any replacement for the model.......A 30k Maserati that looks as good as the GT will always find buyers but may just take a little longer to sell...

Yep Maserati are in the top 5 for least depreciating cars and that is obvious when you look at the market.

I think Andy is right, buy a ropey one with high miles and it will take a long time to sell come retail time. Buy one with lower miles, great history and provenance, immaculate condition and you will have a queue of buyers waiting come resale time. Your best bet is to speak to Dicky Grace, tell him what you want and he can put the feelers out for a car and he always finds a peach of a car. I'd rather pay that bit extra and buy from a specialist dealer or a car known to the forum.

Thanks guys totaly understand what you mean by using a specialist for security but part of the fun for me is sniffing out my own good car at an attractive price :) I do my research and have not got stung yet :) I got a cracking one owner Aston for just under £30k as in pic .
I am really interested if anyone sold one or selling one of the time they hang around for , best colours etc ??? The purchase of buying a Maserati is with the heart but if i can back that up a lil with the mind I would be happier :)

Wait a minute you got a Vantage for under 30k BUT you said it needed a clutch and £5500 to sort it all out? That's not exactly a good buy to me.

BTW my mate offered me a Vantage 2 years ago for £26k with 18k miles on in mint condition. I kick myself now!!!

Stunning cars...The V8 Vantage is still one of the best looking cars on the road after all these years......Such a perfect shape. Not a bad angle anywhere on her.

Note the comment re service at £700. That would only cover a very basic service for a GT and given they have two year service intervals most will have other service items to do.

I appreciate that and Maserati servicing is not going to be cheap ! More interested in people's buying/ selling experiences of GTs around that price :)

Having just come out of a Vantage into a GT I very much doubt the running costs between the two will be massively different. At a main dealer, if you do less than 12k miles in 2yrs, I believe you're looking at 1.4k-2k (the latter if you have age related items like carbon can, various belts etc sorted).

The Aston averaged about 1k per year for me (over not much short of 9yrs ownership), using main dealers. Sometimes a chunk less, sometimes more depending on bits that were needed....and note it rarely needed anything much beyond the std service items.

You may find a 4.2 a bit lacking after having a Vantage in terms of performance. It's a good bit heavier than a Vantage (which is itself pretty heavy for the size of car) and only marginally (5%) more powerful. The later GTs had 10% more power than the 4.2 (in S form) or 15% more (in Sport form). That said, the cars are quite different in nature...both are more GT than true sports car, but the GT is further toward that end of the scale. Both are fantastic cars to own.

(The low miles Vantage at 26k must have either been a poor spec or in need of work imminently in all likelihood. p/x on mine was more than that figure, 55k miles, needing some paint and due a service. Things are always cheap for a reason :) )

You did imply in your opening post that you binned the Vantage in large part due to servicing costs...that being the case, care is needed ;)

Keep an eye on the cars for sale. A lot of them hang around for a while, especially at the moment. So I reckon deals are to be done...BUT cars with the very best spec and provenance don't hang around too long. So if you're serious and fussy (research specs carefully on here - it may make you more fussy than you think - it did me in many ways!), you need to be ready to pull the trigger :)

Good luck in the search.

Thanks guys , I knew the Aston would be expensive as well but I was due a £5k bill so sold it for £32 k I would not have got £37 k after a service plus I did not have a spare £5k at the time so decided to sell Simple as that But as Gran Turismo prices seem static even a £2k service would be less than depreciation on most cars :)

But what happens when your GT is due 5k worth of expenditure? Your Vantage actually appreciated but it didn't prevent the 5k upkeep bill being unaffordable...

The point is that it doesn't take much to rack up that kind of bill on cars like this - full service, set of tyres, brake discs and pads front and rear. You may be unlucky to get all of these things together, but it can happen...and spread over a reasonable period of ownership these things tend to increase your average annual cost significantly over the £700 a year mark.

You fell lucky on the purchase/sale price of the Aston. I'm not convinced that sort of thing on a car genuinely needing that amount of work is the norm', so well done on that front. Just make sure you're going in with eyes fully open - as noted, some cars are hanging around so deals can probably be done, but you are likely to be in the same boat when you come to sell, especially if you need to sell.

Whilst the 4.2 is at the lower end of the price scale, I think that's largely down to the later derivatives being available and not at significantly greater cost. I suspect residuals will do well over all, but who really knows.

Guys this is why I did not want to get into a servicing debate ! I have had plenty of rapid cars 5 Porsches , Aston , Corvette, Prowler etc none with cheap Parts but where there is a will there is a way They have been serviced when necessary and repaired with genuine parts I own a sign Graphic company near Silverstone and do lots of work on Race cars and with Tuning companies, KTM and Aston Martin and generally know or have a contact of a professional that will help me out :) I understand a lot of guys think £5k for a heavy service is fine and happy to pay the full price ! I know a lot of Garage owners and Servicing is the easiest earner . I am happy to pay £700 to get a specialist service stamp but if a clutch needed doing I would use the garage next to me who do all the Silverstone Aston Martin fleet at £50 per hour ! If I can source an original part cheaper I will . This is my way of affording lovely cars ! If you have the disposable income to throw £5k into a service that's great personally I cannot please do not be offended by this I am quite well off but not rich by any means I have expensive tastes in Cars but through careful running and having a lot of contacts I can pursue my hobby Please don't tell me if I am not prepared to happily spend £5k on a service I should not be driving a Maserati because I will think that is quite elitist and put me off Maserati owners .....,

roocari.....5k on servicing is just a lot of money and I couldn't justify spending that sort of cash.....Owning a Maserati will not be cheap but as time has gone on the models do get better... The GT has 2 year servicing unless you do a shed load of miles and then its yearly....I believe a service every two years is around 2k........but as the GT is now years old I am sure a speaciallst will service for less......but owning a Maserati is a great experience and being on here will enhance that experience with meets, track days and trips abroad......We would all love to see you in a Maserati and be part of the Sportmaserati family.

From my own experience, you need to set aside around the equivalent of 2k pounds a year to be safe with a 30,000mile+ GT 4.2.

Things can and do need maintaining/replacing simply due to the age of the car.

Tyres are one of the biggest bills as well as rotor/disc replacement.

I'd look out for those items in particular on any car you're thinking of purchasing.

Good luck and hope to see you here in a Maserati.

Thank you Andy for your welcome and advice from what I have read so far big expenditure seems to be around Brakes and Dampers are there any other weak points to Early 4.2 Autos ? I know it will not be quite as sharp or fast as the Vantage or 911 I had previously but I appreciate cars for different reasons on the GT I just think it is such a beautiful car ! I can live with the slight drop in performance for those looks and sound :)

Have you considered the 4.7 MC Shift? £10-£15k more but they sell easy and don't devalue. Sold mine 3 years ago, if I was selling it now I would get exactly the same for it today.

The performance gain is massive over the 4.2.

I would love a 4.7MC Shift but that is out of my budget I could get togethet £38k which might just get me into a slightly higher milage 4.7S but I think it is wise to keep a lil money back just in case Ideally I think £28-29k on a 40k ish miles 4.2 Auto would make me happy . There are lots of 45- 50k mile GTs advertised at £30k at dealers So if I can find a private seller with a nice car I think that is a realistic Target to aim for :)
