Before you take it in, have a look under the plastic, removable louvre down each side of the engine. Under each one, tucked away down the side, you will find rubber tubes with a 'T' piece. If one of these pipes come off you will get this fault. It's happened to mine and is very easily sorted. Have fun!

Oh dear! Do we know what the definition of short journeys is in this context? I normally do about 8 miles each way in mine. I would have *thought* that would get them hot?

C
Ha ha, i'd say 8 miles is fine pal, I personally went to the next street and back (lazy 6it I know) but I did it and the next time I started it, it was fine, then revved it up and the engine just bogged down and got engine lights, and within 4 mins, got the slow down message. Was narf scarry !
What a shock when I removed the pipes and found both front cats had broken completely.

Yeah, that sounds like a total sod. Aftermarket seems to be the way to go, at least, and not *as* expensive as replacements :)

Spoke to MIJ today who said they could fit me a pair of 200 cell sports cats for £500, seems good value to me

Has anyone got a heads up on this company and the quality of their products please? They seem "too cheap" by comparison to others. If it seems too much of a bargain it probably is not worth buying scenario?

Sorry, Iv not been on a computer for months as been away, and yes. MIJ are ok, they seem to know their stuff and weld very well. I had a pair of 4200 rear boxes fitted recently by them and they are made well, and fitted well. They seem to work on a volume basis to earn their upkeep, whereas most companies tend to rely on selling or fitting 1 exhaust or whatever to pay their weeks running costs.
I personally endorse their work as a past and returning customer, and they do a good range of 200 cell metal core cats too.................

Bumping this, not because I don't believe Fossy but just because I would like to hear from more than one person before I buy a new system. I have a rattling noise from under what appears to be the front to middle of the underside of my new 4200 and I am worried about it being cat problem and large pieces of the cat being sucked up into the engine. The MIJ system seems so much cheaper than everything else on the market. Don't want to buy Larini's if other products are available for less than half. I also take on board what people on here are saying about "they all buy the cats from the same place".

I had a pair of stainless rear boxes made for my old 3200 by MIJ. I was really happy with the product and service. Yes, they were way cheaper than any alternative I'd found, but I had no issues at all. They built the boxes to my specification on site - I chose the tailpipes and the volume/noise l wanted. They then drove me to the centre of Walsall where I spent a couple of hours avoiding the 'interesting' community that lived there and returned later to my finished car.
I now have Larini rear boxes on my GS. They look lovely but are worth nowhere near the £2.5k cost IMO. Thankfully they were already on the car when I bought it - I enjoy the noise and have to accept the boominess that accompanies it at certain revs/speeds. If I'd paid for them I would not think I had got value for money.

The rattling buzzy can turn out to ba a heat shield, the cat failure sound like little stones being rattled around in a tin can, as ever a diagnosis is needed.

I got my straight throughs via Autoshield, less droney than when originally fitted.....made with a higher grade S/S apparently too...they were £550-600, plus not welded on like some I beleive

It does sound a bit like "little stones rattling around in a tin can" .........it does appear worse when the engine is cold. The only other interesting thing is that when I started it yesterday "to hear the noise again" the fans kicked in after just a couple of minutes which I thought was strange them kicking in so soon from cold.

*Probably* the aircon driving the fans, but as Frank said.

I had my secondary CATs and the central resonator replaced with a custom X-pipe at MIJ, they did a good job and the car now sounds a lot better and seems to rev a bit more freely. they definitely up the price when they see it's a maserati, a guy next to me got a full system for his Audi cheaper than what i got my work done for.
