HR Owen service pricing

Hi all,
I took my 2019 Granturismo for its year 4 service to HR Owen in Wandsworth.

I had booked this appointment back in April and the lady verbally quoted me a figure of £3,245 inc VAT at the time.
When I turned up yesterday, they handed me a sheet which had the pricing at just over £3,800! They had even hand written the 8 over the printed price. (Which I couldn’t see)

I thought this must be a mistake and pointed it out. I also mentioned that the price I was quoted when I booked the service appointment. He said it was a mistake and did I have the quote in writing. (I didn’t)

After a lot of back and forth (The service advisor spoke to his manager) they reduced it to £3,541.

Begrudgingly I accepted, as I had travelled from Surrey and just wanted to get on with the day.

What do other members feel about this?
If you are quoted a service price when booking and are then presented with a different price on arrival, what are your options?

I wish I had asked for the quote in writing, but I didn’t know they would ask for more!

The year 4 service is excruciatingly expensive as it is (Lambda sensors etc) but this is ridiculous.

I’m really not happy with HR Owen here.

Ouch, even with a written quote in April I suspect they could have argued price increases between then and now, parts alone are likely to have increased as have most other things so not sure it would have made much difference.

If you had nothing other than the 4 year service its £1495 plus VAT at Sportsitalia but we do not replace the lambda sensors, its not required. If you would like this done its and additional £595 plus VAT.

If we had quoted someone lower in writing then yes we would honour it, in fairness your issue is that verbal quote cannot be proved either way and is contentious.

Probably a lesson to us all.

If it was me I’d have been starting with specialist independents at this point. A couple near me with ex Ferrari/Maserati staff, or if I was closer I’d be at SportsItalia as well.

When I called in at the local place to me, and asked for pricing he said he wouldn’t even recommend changing Lambda sensors at a service. Why do it preventatively, just do it when they need it.

I guess you are tied into replacing the lambdas after the first 4 years if you have an extended maserati warranty. After that then why bother until they go bang. Mine were done at 8 years, as they were throwing some errors, having not been done by the first owner after 4. (Come to think of it - that was coming up to eight years ago now... :worried1: )

Hmmm, that is poor form but the starting point for a 4 year Granturismo main dealer service does seem to be £4k these days which is shocking considering what they do.

You can get it down to around £2k if you remove the stuff that doesn't need doing (lambda sensors, spark plugs, carbon cannister) and the main dealer offers a discount on labour and/or parts. Some main dealers will discount and some won't. Some won't stamp the book if you don't have the full £4k service. It's a postcode lottery!

For my 2019 car Marenello Egham quoted £3800 in April for 4 year service with lamdas (needed to maintain the warranty). Final bill was £3250 in July (go figure). So this worked in the opposite direction for me. Suggest you find another MD or go indie as I will be for the next one.

If you remove those items that is a 2 year service. £895 plus vat as SI.

My 4 year service is coming up in a few months and got quoted £4.3k from Maranello Egham and about £3.8k from HR Owen. It’s still under warranty for over a year so it has to be main dealer unfortunately. Might broaden the search outside London to see if it’s any better?

I thought with the Right to Repair it could be done by a Specialist using Genuine parts.
Is that only a EU thing now since the UK left ?

I doubt very much that anyone would have changed that, won’t be high on anyone’s list of priorities.

Makes an extended warranty super expensive if you take it to Maserati still when car is a few years old. Money for the extended warranty itself, plus £2k ish extra each service. Hardly seems worth it.

Interesting to read your comments and feedback.
I chose HR Owen as the car has a Maserati warranty and if there were any issues, they could rectify them under warranty.
At the time of booking in April, Maranello quoted £4,300 for this service and HR Owen, £3,245, so I went with HR Owen.
The disappointing aspect for me is that the MD's are seemingly free to set their own pricing, rather than stick to a fixed menu system like Porsche.
Also, it didn't look good when they handed over the job sheet on my arrival with a hand written correction on it with a higher price.

The health check yesterday showed that there were no issues with the car which was good.
They did offer to change the wipers at £147 though! :)

Think I'll try to do them myself, can't be that hard right?

I have the car for another 2 years and the warranty expires next week. For future work, I'll use Sports Italia then. They're 1 hour drive from where I live.

If you particularly need MD servicing, it’s worth chatting with Meridien Modena as they sometimes do deals. Likely still to be more than SI, but less than HR Owen or Maranello.
I‘ll be using them for my Spyder, as they were the original supplying dealer (being the GB importer back in 1992) and the car has full history with them ever since. It’s obviously rare to find a Maser with all its history at just one garage for over 30 years, so I’m keen to keep that run going.

I just spoke to Meridian Modena who are unfortunately no longer an authorised maserati dealer from 31st August this year. They were extremely helpful on the phone but recommended I use an authorised dealer to ensure I don’t get an issues with maserati approved warranty claims further down the line.

Friend with a Ghibli got a service quote from Maranello for £1500, told him to try Independents, Sports Italia, Autofficina, Macari. He got a quote for £800 from Autofficina in Epsom and rang Maranello to cancel, they asked him the reason for cancellation and he told them he had a cheaper quote, they then offered to match it and do the service for £800. The stupid bugger accepted. I warned him that they may find something that needs attention outside of the service schedule.
