Hi Does anyone know how to release the clutch thrust bearing so the gearbox will come away from the engine?
The manual shows a special tool inserted into an area I can't recognize :(
Many thanks

Remove the clutch from the flywheel, flip it over, using long nose pliers, pinch the metal ends together and wiggle.

the gearbox just pulls off, again, wiggle

make sure it’s level and not p!ssed or it with get stuck…from memory, lift the prop end to level

It’s probably seized in the spigot bearing. Use prybars….one on each side.

You removed all the bolts yes and have a gap already?

ok so I have released the starter/gearbox bolts and the bellhousing slid of ~1 inch off the back of the engine before getting stuck.
Not sure what you mean remove clutch from flywheel it is still hidden in bell housing?
I assume if i get some extra long plyers and squeeze the metal end together then a careful tap on the clutch lever should dislodge it?
Thanks

Hi recommend you change rear main oil seal and spigot bearing if you haven't already thought about it.

Many thanks for the input. The solution was:
- The spring clip needs to be released from the clutch bearing before the gearbox can be removed. Nice explanation of mechanism here:
https://driven.boards.net/thread/175/maserati-3200-clutch-release-bearing
  • In theory the clip can be reached by long nose pliers if you do not have a special tool.
  • When the long nose pliers reach the spring clip they may of course just shear part of the spring clip as it is corroded in place - there is of course then no way then to remove it especially given the usual level of zero access.
  • You can however slide the gearbox sufficiently off the engine, keeping it well aligned, to gain access to the clutch housing bolts
  • By rotating the gear box housing you can release each clutch bolt in turn and extract teh gearbox with clutch attached.

In that way the gearbox will release from the engine, albeit you then have another adventure on how to remove the clutch bearing form the gearbox. That, as they say will be a whole nother adventure!

You can see in the first pic that I clearly did remove the clutch with the gearbox
