A quick search on the Internet suggests that the dual-cast / bimetallic brake disk casting process is patented. The patent posting date was 2009 and the patent was assigned to a subsidiary of GM. It's a bit odd that the posting date post-dates the existence of dual-cast brake disks. This doesn't mean that other companies can't license the patent, of course, but it does suggest that it would be quite a limited number of companies willing to either make that investment or to risk getting clobbered for IPR infringement. I'm sure GM has some enthusiastic patent trolls with sharp teeth and voracious legal teams.
