I found a thread on the other site: http://www.*********************/m_19601/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#19684

Back in July I posted a thread on this site. 50 people looked yet nobody replied, so I went about it myself.
Full info on the website showtinc.com
More Air Intake Noise / Filter
My 2002 Maser 4200GT has a wonderful roar through the air intake when you floor the pedal, especially at 3 to 4000 revs. Has anyone played around with filters/intake tubes to better the sound. I remember my Alfa 1750GTV many years ago, I removed the factory air box and fitted pancake air filters on the twin 40DCOE carbs unleashing the best sound ever.

Ever since the first drive in my Maserati, I have wished for a little more oomph in the sound department.

Having spent countless hours researching modified exhaust systems for the 02 to 06 coupe I was about to give up. They all sound like an american V8 blat, I wanted the scream of a Ferrari V8
I figured the only way to get the sweet sound I was looking for was linking the two exhaust pipes into a big exhaust box across the back of the car, like on a 355/360/430. Alas the spare wheel well would have to be cut away from the rear bodywork to make room. (maybe not a bad idea because the factory don’t give you a wheel to put in it) However it would put a serious dent in the resale value of the car.
Then I thought back to my old Alfa.
Nobody answered my post, so I went about researching it myself.
I contacted a company who specialize in foam air filters. They make their foam filters for off road vehicles competing in the grueling Baja 1000 race, so they must be pretty good.
On removing the factory cardboard filter, I found the long intake pipe had little in the way of sound deadening fins or chambers. The filter however, as you can see from the pictures, is big enough to fit on a John Deer Combine Harvester.
The foam filter these guys made, similar in design to the original and a perfect fit, was getting my hopes high on rekindling the spine tingling sensation I got 30 years ago with my Alfa.
As you can hear from the soundtrack on the video, it works incredibly well. The sound when you cruise around is just like the original, nice but a little tame. At half throttle you can now hear the engine even from 2000 rpm. When you hit the pedal, at any revs, all **** lets loose. Best of all, the sound crescendo’s all the way up to a wonderful wailing scream at 7000+ revs.
To top it all, it filters dust and dirt as well or better than the original.
Making one filter on a small budget would be a difficult task. But I thought there must be more owners out there looking for a sound this sweet. So I have got quite a few of these available. I figured if I could price this re-useable filter for close to the factory cardboard throw away filter it would sell and put smiles on a lot of faces.
So there you have it
Let the grins begin.

Sounds lovely and bloody cheap I would say against the rice of an exhaust...

On my 993 coupe I drilled 2" inch holes in the airbox and it definatly made a better noise, and it was free.....the car sounds superb on the link

You could always use such as a K&N strapped on to the top front of the engine, Emtee I think has this on his GS MCV and it sounds just fine.

Be interesting to hear about that.

Problems might be warm air instead of cold? But possibly a major solution to the water-locking problem, if you can remove the air intake/water scoop!

There was a photo on here of Emtee's engine with the K&N fitted in a thread, but no idea where it might be, I'll have a look.

Does that just involve removing the plastic box housing the air intake and having a more cone type intake?

Here is the standard version...

Re Hodroyds posting

Great if we could get confirmation from Miles on how effective this was and if the engine management system reacted kindly to the change

Indeed, be good to know is the MAF is still present or relocated?

Something like that.
The Trofeo remember has a big spoiler to most likely scoop air to the area of the air box in our cars, but they fitted a cone filter in that area instead...by the looks of it.

True but what effect did that have on the mapings etc.if any?

Change over seems doable (Miles can comment) but not sure on whats required beyond that

Searching other info, it appears they changed the Trofeo intake on various years, the last appears to have no filter at all with an air intake linked to the front spoiler.
I think a cone filter in the area of the air box is a good idea though for a road car.

Looks like a candidate for a group buy - if we can sort the configuration and iron out the wrinkles. I would be up for it!

Miles,
Have you any input to this mate..??
Cheers

Sorry Rob, the GS has the box filter rather than the cone filter.

Trofeo style intake?

Interested to know where you got that diagram from MJ? It shows the MAF as still used, so this should still regulate the intake and therefore not upset the management so long as the filter is placed correctly and not restrictive. Should be easy enough to cross reference the cone filter shown in that diagram to a K&N equivalent, after that it's just a case of getting the right collar. It won't do anything that the K&N box filter wouldn't, but it could improve the sonics, as per the title of this thread.

EDIT: Found it on your other thread posting MJ. Sorry, looking again it shows the throttle box but not the MAF sensor, so this would need adding I think. Still looks doable though.

Definately doable , but would necessatate about 6 inches off the neck of the airbox to be cut off (or complete removal of the airbox) , airboxes last time i bought one were £125.00 , rarely are there used ones about , as even the slightest of knocks on the nearside tend to break the lugs , if i was to attempt this i would at the very least like some fresh forced air up into the new air intake , so cutting the old box about would achieve this

Yes looks like no MAF sensor with the Trofeo, the ECU on the Trofeo is most likely mapped on throttle angle only, which is quite normal.
You of course will need to keep the MAF unless you want to replace the ECU..!
I've a PDF listing the Trofeo bits, you know how you gather such stuff!
