Headlights in France

Going to France tomorrow for the day, £22 return via Eurotunnel!! In the past I've always fitted the stick on headlight adapters when away for a while but not been abroad in the 4200. Thinking about whether I should bother as will only be driving in dark for about an hour and had trouble removing the stick on adhesive before.

Thanks P, pretty apt you were the first to reply to a French themed post! Where did that name come from?

I've got the triangle, Hi Viz in the car etc. but the headlight kit I saw had no instructions for where to place them on a Maserati so I didn't bother buying it. Was thinking about using some black electrical tape but no idea where to place it!

If it has HID [xenon] lights there is a reduced 'kick' in the light beam, as such there is less of a need to blank it off with a deflector...however are you able to explain this to french police????

If not I would place a little tape between the two lines on the head-light cover that was the police will have no reason to issue you with a fixed penalty...works for me

Best to be safe than sorry , last time i was stopped by the gendermes they escorted me off the motorway to the nearest services and stopped right outside the cashpoint , sort of says it all really

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. Most of the people you are going to be dazzling are french, so it doesn't really matter. It would be worth the fine to get to tell that to Les Cochons! And don't forget the 'v' sign, they love that.

I take it you're married to a French woman......have a holiday home there.......and like their wines...................;)....?

Just reaffirming our mutual respect. Lovely country spoiled by (most of) the french!

I raised the same question last year and decided against the stickers, although I had everything else. I spent a week there in total and drove to Euro Disney and then into Paris.

As an aside I got stuck in Paris and had to "make up some time" on the way back and ended up getting flashed by a camera..... although never did hear anything from them :)

Enjoy!

When I took the GS in Nov, I asked a specialist and Meridien Modena and neither said there was any need to adjust Xenons. I also asked the AA man at the Chunnel terminal (I reeeeally didnt fancy a fine) and he too said "nope, dont worry about it".

I was told if I was bothered, park the car in front of a wall and adjust the beams with tape. My beam pattern was pretty flat so I didnt bother.

Good day out, great excuse to cruise at 80 on the M20 then floor it to feel great acceleration from that speed!
Took everything but didn't bother with the tape. Police had a high profile in Calais but seemed more interest in wayward youth than traffic offences.
Traffic wardens looked scarier than the police so didn't chance that!

With xennons being so popular nowdays im surprised there isn't a downloadable list in french/german etc , of all the cars that don't need to change or adjust headlamps would solve a regular dilemma for a lot of english holliday makers travelling to europe ,if asked just show it to the genderme or polizei.......simples
