Handbrake?

Hi all,

Is it just my 2005 QP, or are all the handbrakes particularly poor on this model?

It hardly holds the car on the level not to talk of a slope!

Regards,

Pat.

No, it's a common problem. Mine was pretty cr4p so I got the drum re-finished, fitted new shoes and now, it works very well.

Mine's pretty poor too but having owned loads of Italian cars I never even questioned it. I would never trust it to hold the car on any slope. In fact I don't know why I still pull up the lever - habit really :)

Mine is pretty poor too (although not that bad). I bet there aren't many QP owners who park regularly on steep slopes and hence most probably put off sorting it!
Nothing that a new pair of shoes (parts should be around a ton) can't sort.

The problem as I see it is; as the handbrake is only applied when the wheel is stationary there is no surface abrasion, so once rust starts to form on the drum surface there is nothing to get rid of it. Consequently the brake shoes start to grip on rust, which, when compressed by normal use, is a lot less grippy than cast iron. Just a thought.

Pat,

If the shoes have not delaminated you can follow the official workshop proceedure after resetting the shoes and cable, you apparently drive down the road at 20mph and apply the handbrake for 10 second bursts then off for 30 seconed I think it was 5 times. It is in the workshop manual I'll try and find it if I get a moment. THis does clean the surface up a bit and improves things but don't cook them.

Wasn't there a link on this site for a DIY guide about how to clean them yourself, eg removing the brake disk and cleaning them up?

Hi all,

Thanks a lot for your replies, going out to do the 'drive with the handbrake on thing', might be back....
