GTS or R8?

Driven an R8 V8 back in the day and believe me they are not quick cars, same lump essentially as the B7 RS4 but getting back into my B5 (forced induction) RS4 it felt so much quicker. The only one I would have is the V10 R8 that's for sure and even then I doubt I'd swap the GTS for it as it is as Benny says soulless in comparison.

Even the older V10 is lagging albeit it's been out a while.

The current round up make more favourable figures - but then these days, I question the reasons if the car doesn't tempt me at even moderately high power levels.

Mad Bob, a mate of mine, has got an S Tronic V10 spider and it really is a great car. He's had an Akropovic exhaust fitted and got It tuned up to about 590bhp. The standard motor has its butterflies restricted to about 70% so this restriction was removed and it was given better fuelling at the top end. Now, it flies and has a very distinctive and very nice sound. I can see what he likes about it, in fact he loves it, but I wouldn't swap it for the Frankenspyder.

Personally, I think the coupe R8 looks shite. The spider looks pretty good. I'm inclined to bet that Ben's mate's one sounds pretty bloody good as well. I'd have one, but not instead of something with a boatload more charisma and style.

the V10 is spooky fast in any trim, it feels like a huge push in the back, but little emotion. regarding the looks IMHO the R8 looks **** in photos but the proportions look amazing when you seem them in the flesh. The one other thing that put me off the R8 is luggage space. Really, ONE small sports bag!? The Spyder is worse as you can't even shove a jacket behind the seats...

Yet another way in which our cars are so d4mn hard to beat.

I'd like both in my garage. Totally different cars. The V10 with manual box is an immensely capable sports car that is also comfortable for touring, but don't pack much more than a spare pair of socks. Sorry all but even a Stradale would quickly disappear from the R8 V10s rear view mirror on most roads.

But the R8 is bits of metal nicely bolted and welded together whereas the Maser has Italian soul. That soul makes it feel and sound so special to drive whatever the road and speed.

I've been lucky enough to own a few nice sporting cars. Every time I jumped into a German one I knew I would get to my destination pleasurably and without fuss. In the Italian ones it would have more drama, not always in a good way, but oh so rewarding. Bit like my ex European girlfriends come to think about it!

I agree most German cars are soulless and lacking drama but I never found that with my old E60 M5...you must agree Phil?

A 530d Touring M Sport was the reason I had the M5 for 3 month's. Couldn't average better than 21mpg although car ran perfectly! Various specialists had it for a total of 3 months & not one could find a fault other than the mpg was shocking. Was a nice car and spec but typical BMW MSport harsh ride on runflats.

The M5 was a little worse mind! However what a great 3 months to average 11.6 mpg!!

It was a really nice car to do miles in but pano roof leaked as well. I had an S212 Merc E220 SE Estate after that which was so much more comfortable but much less sporty & less interesting to drive.

Ive had both a German and Italian (Sicilian) ex girlfriends.

The German was energetic, dependable but had an odd sense of humour so was bit like their cars.
The Italian was wild, crazy and threatened to kill me (stab me) but she was gorgeous. Again bit like their cars.

Completely true! The V10 is immense. A stradale and V8 R8 are about equal in a straight line and on curves. In fact most tests I have seen show the stradale a hair quicker.

Not even a comparison really, the GT is exotica and the R8 is a stereotypical Teutonic car; good at most things but great at none.

If you owned both, which keys would you go for? Exactly...
