GT S to MC Stradale ownership

Hi all,

There are many forum threads on what exactly is the point of the Gran Turismo MC Stradale, as many argue that MC Stradale was simply a slight improvement over the Sport that many found the £20K+ premium hard to justify. I can now see why a Stradale is more than just the sum of its minor improvements over the Sport.

I had a fantastic ownership experience over the past 5+ years of a 2009 GT S. The driving experience, the look of the car and most importantly the exhaust note made it such an exciting experience.

I have never kept a car for more than 2 years before the Maser, and I really wanted a change, so I decided to sell my pristine condition GT S via a broker about 2 months ago. I was planning to wait until the Spring before started looking, but found myself browsing Pistonheads and Autotrader soon after I sold my car.

I have looked at the various “alternatives”, but found it impossible to find a real substitute for a Granturismo – a car that is fantastic to look at, sits 4 in comfort and most important of all, an exhaust note to die for! Well, I really could not find any plausible alternative, and before long, I started looking at Granturismo AGAIN !

A big thanks to 3Leftovercrest for his beautifully maintained 2014 Stradale, I came across his car on this forum by chance about a month ago, and I bought it last Wednesday because I simply could not resist the ownership of a Stradale. It must have been hard for 3Leftovercrest to sell the car, but having other interesting automotive legends must have made it easier to bear.

Now my experience on the Stradale compared to my GT S and a Sport that I had for a month while the dealer was trying to sort out the paper work for my GT S.

I have never driven a Stradale before my purchase, apart from admiring the sculpture carbon fibre bonnet with the elegant but aggressive vents, so I did not know what to expect when driving the car home from Canary Wharf. What an experience it was ! The Stradale is like a complete different car compared to the GT S, and a big improvement over the Sport. Yes, the car rides firmer and is definitely not as comfortable as a GT S or Sport, the gear shift is brutal in Race mode, the carbon ceramic brake is a huge improvement, and that exhaust note – just how did they tune the exhaust note to produce this symphony!! Maserati certainly has done a great job tweaking an already great Sport model to create the magnificent Stradale, the car feels more “analog” and hardcore, it feels more raw and at the same time more luxurious with all the leather and alcantara interior trims.

The set up is exactly how I like it, I have driven many high performance cars in the past, the car may not be as fast compared to the AMG, BMW M and the Porsche, but the whole package makes you feel so special behind the wheel and you would look for any excuse to take the car out for a drive.

I can now understand why there are so many loyal Maserati fans in this forum, starting from 3200, 4200, Gransport and all the way to the Maserati Stradale. It is strange that Maserati does not hold the same status as its sibling Ferrari from car collectors perspective.

A few interesting observations though that I hope you guys could shed some lights…
  • Why is the 1 and R gear surround not in Carbon Fibre, I don’t think there is any package that would give you this? If Maserati has even used Carbon Fibre on the window sills, surely they should have included one more piece of carbon fibre on the gear surround.
  • I understand that you get the 2 red strips on the Maserati logo to signify that it is the more hardcore MC Shift model back then. Interestingly, I have got he 2 red strips on the front Maserati logo, but no red strips on the 2 logos on the side C Pillars. One of them seems to have a red dot on the logo – they ran out of paint?
  • The side repeater is in orange – this looks like something they picked up from the 90’s. I think the side repeater for the Sport is clear, but the repeater for the Sport model appears different to the Stradale, anyone know how I could remove this and replace it with a clear lens?
A couple of photos below showing my beloved 09 GTS, and one of the fantastic photos of the Stradale taken by 3Leftovercrest.

We should all be grateful to be able to own and drive these special machines !

Well what can I say but...yes!

I had a GTS 8 years ago and been in the Strad 18 months. It is a fantastic car and yes I keep harping on about it.

It wasn’t until I drove Krishna’s car a few weeks ago you reasoned just how different they are.

Mine goes back on the road next Saturday and I really can’t wait!

My indicators are clear but Zep’s are orange. The rear quarter emblems should have red lines. They get broken frequently when cleaning. I suspect they have been replaced and the attempt to paint the lines in was not done well.

Gear switch consul carbon was an option.

It’s very interesting to read about others experience between S and Stradale. I was on the same boat when I sold my porsche 997 and decided on maserati .
I ended up with S for its dual personality , and to me S sounded better than Stradale . Better in the aspect of the exhaust note is deeper tone , it has a mature presence . And for my driving conditions I found Stradale gear change too sharp. But both are amazing cars .

If Maserati comes up with a sports car with Stradale characteristic I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one .

I have a black on black GTS . With yellow side indicators which I don’t mind actually

They all have orange side indicators but you can change these easily to black or white, it’s a low cost part, around £30 a pair. You can buy the carbon gearshift unit but it’s about £800 or so which is quite a lot for a very small area.

Can the side orange reflectors be replaced or the whole headlight needs changing ?

Yes, there is a package for this. The package code is MCSC - Switch Controls in Carbon Fib - Center Con although this part is tiny and it doesnt cover all center console.

2 red strips look fine on my car's C pillars.

I was think outrun was referring to the side repeater in orange (can be replaced for 30), not the indicator inside the headlight assembly. You would need to change the whole headlight in order to upgrade to the look of the sport. I picked up a pair from eBay and replaced them on my 09 GTS, look much nicer in my opinion.

Interesting, that package was just for that tiny area around the 1 and R selector. I was referring to the whole panel around it... I guess that was never an option.

Thanks for the info outrun, any idea what tool you would need to replace the side repeater? I will definitely replace them for £30.

If you want to dampen the orange indicator lens in the headlight the easiest approach is some tinted film. Worked a treat on mine. I'll try to find a picture. One sec.

Looks pretty good , was it a complex and time consuming task or straight forward ? Does the lens come off the headlight easily to apply the tint to the reflector ?

I was referring to the side repeaters only, all of the Stradales have clear front headlight repeaters.

Here's some on Ebay,

The carbon surround for the 1/R gear selector is available to order from any main dealer or Eurospares and is a DIY job to change. I replaced mine (although leather, not carbon) as the buttons were wearing. Took an hour looking for trim clips here and there to get the unit out and switched around.

It will be here somewhere or just call them. Once you do, call Ross at Meridien and ask for a comparison price plus the forum discount. They will likely be cheaper.

It took about 5 minutes. Dub Custom, which does wraps, PPF and so on, did it at the same time as they applied a stripe. They said they couldn't possibly let let the car go without trying to tone down those big flashes of orange!

Congratulations on the Stradale. I am still in the honeymoon phase, more than 2 years on. Just love it. I drove a 488 for an hour on Saturday, but was so happy to jump back into the strad. Such a raw, special place.

Can’t agree more azapa, so good to be able to still enjoy th car doing 30mph in 2nd clear ! I throughly enjoyed 5+ years of GT S ownership, it is going to be 10+ years for this one - especially if Maserati replaced this wonderful NA V8 with any form of turbo charged engine!

Thanks Oliver, I certainly am ! With the car in the garage at night, I was just looking and admiring it, and I ended up removing the engine cover and cleaning the engine bay - pathetic I know. I guess that is one advantage of having the vent on the Stradale, the engine bay tends to get dusty easily. My GT S was still spotless when I sold it...

Formula Dynamics do a CF Centre console but it's not cheap. $2795 for the one that a Stradale would need.

Picture is for the Auto version but you get the idea.

That looks great, but $2795 ? I love the look but can think of other ways to spend that money, I wonder how many have they actually sold? I think that alone costs more than one of the carbon fibre packs!
