Enjoy...

It makes for grim reading, Dan. The lives that our children and grandchildren lead will be challenged in unprecedented ways.

Whilst I maintain that Greta would be less annoying (to me) if she was more reasoned and less of a soap-box screamer, the fact that she and environmental change are so much in the headlines suggest that she’s surfacing an issue which for too long was being ignored.

But will we change?

She's 16, why would we expect her to be anything other? While climate change may be in the headlines, what's actually changing? And why?

Will we change, is of course the million dollar question. As you know, I do my bit for the planet in bringing renewable energy to a developing country...

But I've also found a yacht I want to buy that burns 100 liters of diesel per hour, or every 9 miles.

Now here's the thing (man maths alert) for every average domestic PV system installed I can travel 90 miles and burn just under a tonne of diesel. But, that PV system will save many, many times that amount in its 25 year life.

So, am I still doing my bit?

If it was a School report it would be has made good efforts but still needs to try harder.
Well that would be mine in the 70'S.

The very fact that you pose the question indicates you probably know the answer ;)

In terms of climate change there's no way on earth a discretionary thing like that could ever be acceptable but that's not how we work <shrug>

Got kids? ;)

this subject reminds me of the "the day the earth stood still" film, remember the original black and white, happened to come across the Keanu reeves one last night when channel hopping

Interesting. You see, if I didn't sell enough PV systems to fill up the yacht with diesel, the long term effects on the environment would be worse than if I did.

And it's only a question of scale. I sell PV panels that allows me to put diesel in my BMW, but no-one raises an eyebrow at that. Some even give me a pat on the head and say well done.

And in response to your (creepy without context) question, yes I have two. The correct amount for maintaining the population, but not adding to it, long term.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is, we can make positive changes, and still maintain some of the things we love.

Yes, I reckon we can. As individuals. On an individual level. Trouble is, so much of what we do and consume creates pollution elsewhere on the planet. We grumble about China's levels of growth and pollution, yet much of what we use and consumer, directly or otherwise, is produced in and shipped from countries which chuck out a lot of filth during the process.

I suppose the best thing we can all do is live in a shack and grow our own sprouts. Which, in my experience, will create quite a lot of pollution as well.

Personally, I'm still slowing down on meat, trying to buy less shite and walking whenever possible rather than driving or even using public transport. Besides, the tube's horrible.

Dan - yachts suit you. As would a Murci.

Oh, sorry! Wasn't meant to be creepy :) It's the math. Maintaining the population is probably not what we need right now. Nor is 'worse' the 'correct' response to an 'emergency' . Bit like saying 'I bought the fire extinguishers, so forgive me if I lob some petrol on this wild fire'

I'm being a bit flip, and I hope you enjoy your yacht (really!)

Just out of curiosity, what's the environmental impact payback time on them?

Black and white version is my all time favourite film. Remake wasn't too bad as remakes go.
