As Mr Crud has said, I’ve picked up a 2017 facelift Type R Cab. I was unsure what it was going to be like because I couldn’t drive it before I bought due to COVID restrictions. Having owned it for about 7 months I can give a reasonable opinion as to what they are like; really very, very good. If it had a trident on the grille it would be my perfect car, the fact it hasn’t can’t alter the fact that it’s a very capable drivers car. Having done a track day in it on a baking hot day, it behaved impeccably; the brakes didn’t fade, the engine ran perfectly, it handled very well given its size, and surprised more exotic cars through the corners and down the straights.
Granted, it’s no longer standard; it has 200 cell cats (instead of 800s), stage 2 tune with a smaller supercharger pulley, and now has full poly bushing. It’s pushing out about 625bhp and the power is instant and the mid range plentiful. On track I reckon it was getting about 4mpg but on a run, due to the long geared 8 speed ZF box, the most I’ve got to date is 38mpg. The interior is really quite nice, roomy, well put together and a few toys. The sound is just lovely and lots of it, with a few pops and bangs on the overrun if you fancy it.
Downside; with the cab, it’s the boot space. The coupe is quite a bit better than the cab but still not massively roomy.
Overall; I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending one. I just know that my spyder will feel lacking the next time I drive it and I like to think the F Type R is what a next gen 4200 would be like. Do it!!
