Granturismo Audio Upgrade

Has anyone upgraded the audio system in their Granturismo's?

I find the standard setup, horribly lacking in any power or clarity.

First thing I did. My 2008 GT didn't have the Bose upgrade - as you say the audio system is gutless and of musically poor. You have to retain the head unit but I have had a Kenwood 400w amp installed which is mounted in the rear wing/boot behind the 12v charging point, a JL Audio Sub installed behind the passenger foot well with JL Audio speakers in the doors. The sub volume control is in the central glove box so you can turn it into a disco.

Sounds very respectable now and more power than my ears need.

Noor - have a search on here for posts by Palmball (Andrew) who had a complete audio upgrade in his GTS. IIRC he was very pleased with the outcome.

just remembered..I had the inside of the doors lined with a sound-deadening material, improves the audio and makes the doors sound much better when you close them!!

Fitted MC Sportline fixed rate suspension too. Mind sold his car five minutes later!

Hi noor - I have the Bose upgrade and its OK for what I need. Not sure id spend 1600 on anything better tho. The PO on my fez spent 2000 on a full system upgrade and I dont turn it on!

Off topic Noor, but if you get chance would you PM me a pic of your front wheels with the spacers fitted?

Had the Bose in my GTS and I was wholly underwealmed. When I saw the size if the base in the rear shelf I was expecting great things but sadley no.

Fortunately the SPORT button provided all the audible content nesesary ;-)

Yeah, I agree with Matt. It *can* sound pretty good... but mostly I listen to the stereo operatics that the exhaust plays.

I've yet to hear a BOSE 'upgrade' that actually sounds any good in a car. Car buyers are encouraged to shell out ridiculous figures for so-called upgrades of systems that are nowhere near as good as mid range aftermarket components. These systems are rarely made by the brand, usually only approved by them for a licensing fee. Little thought goes into placement of speakers and sound dynamics/acoustics inside a car - they're simply placed where there is space. A case in point here is the subwoofer in the rear shelf of a Granturismo - it's mounted free air (no enclosure) onto a non-baffled surface with no strength or deadening. At best it will flap about and deliver some minor movement of air. I ripped the BOSE system out of my Alfa GT and replaced it all with an amazing sounding system for less than £500 - the sound difference was night and day. The only half decent upgrade I've heard was in my Range Rover - it had a Harmon Kardon sound system which was OK. I still tore it out and ended up spending over £12k on a AV system which remains the best I ever built! Excessive, but unbelievable sound and vision!

I have a GS so not too sure how relevant but i found replacing the crappy front speakers with some decent component speakers coupled with dynamat sound deadening made a **** of a difference for under £200.

Just went and had a chat with these guys, a chap called Gary. They seem very professional and thorough, appreciate the need for quality and found the shoddy bits of my current system very quickly. They have a solution for my lack of front-rear fader that's causing all the sound to come from behind me and will also re-fit the door speakers with plenty of sound-proofing to improve the quality of the output.

I'm due to drop the car off in a couple of weeks as I'm too busy at the moment...install price includes a loan car, but not expecting a Maser unfortunately... : )

Thanks for the pointer, Noor. I'll update you when I've had the work done.

interested to see/know where the Dynamat was fitted, James. Pics would be useful if you have any?

Hi MAF260
Sorry the work was done by my local car audio specialists so no pics.

James

MAF, Gary at audio file said they take photos throughout the process and will give me a USB key with them on for e work he does on my car. They will be re-mounting the speakers and fitting dynamat to the doors, so I'll put the photos up when I get them.

Personally I think the Bose does the job OK. Seems to handle my drum and base fine with out any blow out.
