Good alternative to Skype?

Have been using Skype to conference with some US clients, but the quality and connectivity seems to be deteriorating by the day - or at least since phookin Microsoft bought them out! Anyone got any good alternatives to Skype? I know there are loads out there, just which one to pick.

Two baked bean tins and a very long string.

Sorry I could not resist.

Hello Yeti

I remember you from DSC You won't remember yours truly I'm sure, one of the disenchanted who went off to the upnorth forum. I was talking to JPM/Freak/Mr Mercer about you arriving on here yesterday.

I have used MSN Live and that does a reasonable job, but it all depends on your broadband speed, if that's not good you are going to struggle with any program.

I know you hate Apple Yeti, but the FaceTime is brilliant, as anything that Apple apply their mind to, it works without issue and with ease.

My brother was in Aus at Xmas and to have the family round the iPad with a crystal clear pic and sound from the other side of the planet is truly amazing.

Pretty sure I remember your moniker Pibbow. Can't remember the last time I was on DSC, several years thats for sure. Anyway, good to be among friends!

Think I need to re-word my question to: does anyone know a good alternative to Skype that is neither Microsoft or Apple based? (-:

Just asked the coder and he says Skype is the best non APPLE and MS product.

He says Google talk is rubbish as is the Yahoo attempt.

So you have a choice so you will have to pick the lesser of 3 evils:
1. Skype
2. Messenger
3. FaceTime

Incidentally, Microsoft own both Messenger and Skype but you already new that, and as my coder Trev has put it, "Microsoft have not had enough spare time to ruin Skpye as yet!"

It appears that Microsoft have now found some spare time to balls it up!

Sadly true. I've been using it for quite a while to chat with my US counterparts on the Bugatti project, and it has been getting increasingly worse over the last few months. It wouldn't surprise me if it's a deliberate attempt to downgrade the service to make way for the MS version and/or make people pay for it.
