Gearbox jumped from R to 1&2

Hi

Thanks for the reassurance but did they tell you what it was?

I have done about 800 miles since it last happened and I thought I had got away with it but I've just driven to Coventry (150 miles-ish), stopped a few times and all was good but as I got to the hotel car park I had to stop and get out for a ticket. I put it in N and applied the EPB, got out to get my ticket, got back in and selected first on the paddles and straight away an engine fault popped up on the dashboard. Went to park up and as I backed into a space (downhill this time) it jumped again from R to 1.

Switched it off and restarted it but the engine light was still on so I used my Thinkdiag tool and it brought up the same codes as before:

P1770 - Gear engagement with wrong shifts
P1772 - Opposite gear engagement

but this time an engine code came up too-

P0700 - Fatiesta Accensione Mil from gearbox ECU - Whatever that is!

A quick search and the only real hit was on this forum from 2013 when a similar issue was reported with suggestions of battery and oil/filter change but no real answers.

I cleared the codes and and did a quick bit of shuffling forwards and backwards and everything was fine.

@conaero - Any chance I can take you up on the gearbox relearn later this week or next week?

Cheers everyone for your suggestions.

I'll see if I can find the email correspondence. It was a year ago. From memory the usual Software clears codes does most things but there are some hidden parts only Maserati can access (this could be wrong due to my Memory and possible BS from my garage). But My garage took the car to Maserati after having it for a Month. Nothing mechanical and they solved it so I tend to believe them. I did check the receipt for you but it wasn't any more detailed than telling me the code and that Maserati sorted it (it was under warranty).
The only thing they kept saying was battery. They were adamant that Maserati's suffer when the battery is low etc and that this can cause problems. Not sure I buy it but i keep it plugged in when not in use anyway just in case.

There can be any number of causes, quite often it’s the battery, in your case it sounds like something else might have done it.

Cheers for the info.

I did 150 miles today, stopped twice, made a point of reversing into car parking spaces, selecting N and then a gear and everything else I could think of to simulate what had happened before and nothing, not a thing. It all worked perfectly!

How often did you have this issue? Was it every time you drove the car or intermittently like me?

In my experience with 05 QPV, low battery can cause random dashboard lights flashing (goes away after driving some distance and restart) but not impact the actual driving.

I picked the car up after buying it. Drove home in 2 hours. stopped to reverse onto the drive and it didn't select R. I was in denial at first. Thought it was something I did. managed to turn the car around and drive on forwards. next day was fine until I drove 1 1/2 hours somewhere and tried to back into a space. Came back same day and again tried to back in and it refused. I was thinking it was me a first as I was not used to Maserati's. Not a good start to owning a GT but they sorted it after a month eventually.

I just wanted to give an update on this in case anyone is having similar issues and was wondering how it was going.

So, I know I am going to instantly regret posting this but after @conaero did a gearbox relearn and changed the point of initial slip (as the clutch was found to be dragging a bit) everything appears to be behaving itself.

I have probably now cursed myself and my next post will likely be rather less upbeat!
