Bury FC,
Halifax Town,
Colne Dynamoes,
Our price records... still got vinyl with their price stickers on them.

On my Mancunian mooch the other week, I'm so glad this place is still going strong.

Freeman, Hardy & Willis (1996)
Tandy’s (2001)
Comet (2012)
Tie Rack (2013)
Athena (2014)
Austin Reed (2016)
Banana Republic (2016)
Maplins (2018)
The majority seem to have bit the dust since the new millennium, I'm guessing due to the internet.

No where near as good as it was back in the 80's though!
The poster shop is still there on the 1st floor as is the cafe but the rest of the shops are still fantastically weird. It's the clientele that has definitely changed, much more overt in their dress sense or genders/sexualities than in the 80's.

I guess it's me that's changed!...........I used to shop there in my Psychobilly & Goth days. Last time I went I couldn't see any Cramps or Meteors T-shirts. Just lots of people with bits of metal stuck in their faces!!

On a recent trip to Newcastle for a funeral, my 70 year old Aunt was travelling in the back and noticed that a number of the roadside cafes were now what appeared to be adult shops and she was intrigued to know what they sold. I suggested that they used to be Happy Eaters, and in a way they probably still were.

Times Furnishing
MFI
John Menzies (newsagent)
Somerfield (supermarket)

The last time I saw C&A was in Malta 2022, O assume it’s connected to the same brand, funny how it appears to have survived there.

C&A is a major brand in much of Europe. It is a Dutch company, founded by Clemens and August Brenninkmeijer. I don't really know why it dropped out of the UK market in 2000/2001.

My mother used to call it "Coats and 'ats"

I woulda laid money on C&A being a British firm.

No, a business fails because it's not agile to constantly changing conditions.

Not necessarily - plenty of VERY modern and agile firms have bitten the dust by being TOO responsive to what they imagined to be changing conditions, eg Webvan, Boo. 'Sticking to your knitting' can also work...

I know what you mean but a fair few including myself were lagging behind when the internet revolution took place.

That raises an interesting digression; when did any of us send our first email, or first use a web browser? Or send our last telex or fax?

It was pretty early for me. Barclays was experimenting with internal email with a project that I was involved in back in 1994, and I joined a business serving academic institutions in 1995 which used email and the web to communicate with university customers. (I also had a PalmPilot1000 in early 1997.)

First email for me was sent from the Falklands in July 99, the lovely ladies of the WRVS helped me set up my Hotmail account. Then plied me with cake and tea...
Internet banking since 99 too.
