First day with my GS! First leak...

Hi everybody! This Saturday I bought my first Maserati! I watched everything previously, and I noticed that there was hydraulic oil staining near the F1 pump.

The liquid and the pump was changed 3000 kms ago, but that was December 2015.

In the garaje told me that was normal because the hydraulic oil deposit is full filled and the leftover liquid has to leak...

(Sorry about my English... I don't know if I m explaining well...)

The history is that 300 kms later in my house left only one drop in the floor.

Yesterday I took the car to a detail center and this morning they called me:

- Look at this!

And this afternoon

- Again!

Here is the place that leaks.

What do you think???

It should not leak.
Mine had a leak from a faulty hydraulic pipe in the gearbox.
Pipe changed all sorted .

I have had three F1 coupe over the last 9 years and not a single drop of fluid found on the garage floor...and at times the cars have been stored for many months.

What the garage have said is true; if the hydraulic reservoir is overfilled it'll leak. The fluid looks like it could be reservoir overflow but it could also be from the gearbox hydraulics a it's in the same area.

Cheers,

Simon.

The fluid is perfectly clean... and the cars goes incredible...

Is there not a bleed valve for overfilled oil that you close after ? Being Hydraulic, i would have thought it was a sealed system..... I am no expert on this so any correction is welcome.
Also if that was the case of overfilled oil leaking out.... its done 3000km since the change so that makes me suspicious.

Hydraulic is sealed to work, the oil is non compressible, so any leak even small can result in quite a loss of pressure. It may have an overpressure relief but should not leak.

Remove the boot lining and have a proper look.

If it was just overfilled then after a few uses / km I think it would stop dropping oil, so still after 3000km there must be a problem.

If the circuit does not have the proper oil pressure , should not any lights on the dashboard light up?

There are quite a few possibilities for a leak as you can see in the pic.

Alarms are only 'low cc oil level' or a 'gearbox fault' alarm if you can't shift gears.

If the pump is priming excessively that is a good indication of a problem

Crikey that's a lot of pipes to keep an eye on...hate to think how much this will cost to replace when they are x years old.

Is there any indication as to the life span of the hoses?

The pipes are mostly sheathed, not subjected to UV and probably not much heat so think they should last a good while, hopefully more than 12 years! They all looked in good condition when I had it all apart.

Access is obviously the biggest problem but if I ever needed to replace would use Pirtek as would be cheaper plus ready in hours not days/weeks!

What is Pirtek?

I talked with the one who made the last maintenance and it seems that before they delivered the car to me they checked all levels and, among others, filled the hydraulic fluid again.

The biggest problem with UK cars is the corossion on the metal parts from winter weather.
Those banjo bolts all rusted and would have been annodised when new.
Try and keep them clean.
Easier said than done :)

Thanks to all.

By the way, my GS is one of the non skyhook equipped, that's very rare, and maybe better. Less things to break!

The fluid should be clean irrespective of whether it's overflowing or leaking but if you said the garage topped it up, it probably is a leak.

Reservoir is vented, the fluid in the system is sealed. If the level is too high, when the fluid gets hot, it expands and overflows out of the vent hole. Without the vent hole, the reservoir wouldn't really work.
