Dropping the car off to an alloy wheel refurb specialist next week for repair and acid dip strip and repaint in Grigio Mercury - I was originally going to stick with high gloss anthracite but after seeing more rims in the stock colour I decided that it looks more classy.

I was thinking of doing the calipers in yellow but the service they offer is a respray with the caliper installed and I would prefer a full strip down as I know there is at least 2 layers of paint on those calipers... over winter I will remove them and send them off for a proper refurb with new seals and powder coat in burnished yellow.

I have got some new Grigio Mercury centre caps and a new front tyre to give to them next week. So far quite impressed with their service, had a long chat with the owner regarding the repair I need he was quite open about the types of machine press he has in his workshop and is confident he can straighten them out. They offered drop off and collection in the evening to their home address which is close to the workshop which is useful as I am not working from home much at the moment. Once I have the car back I will report on their work and if all good will share their details

It going to look awesome Fifty!! On the back of the GS rims there are several factory paint codes which can be cross referenced on the PPG paint site. Hope this helps...

LOL Yeah that’s it. I questioned that too. Grigio Mercury is that grey code. I’ve seen both the polished finish code and the silver code as well as mercury grey which is what is on my car (GS mercury grey factory fitted /painted from new). Can’t wait for your next instalment. I’m looking to do wheel refurb so if you get a result with your guys do please pass on their details.

Dropped the car off with the wheel repair specialist last night. I have asked for Girgio Mercury in a high gloss finish with the wheel studs painted in the same colour. Should have the car back on Friday.

Since I am only one write up away from being all caught up I thought I might as well share the rest of the works that went on during the annual service when the FD ARB was fitted. Post service analysis from Aldous was that the clutch plates were showing a decent amount of wear but more concerning was that the thrust bearing seals had given up splattering brake fluid inside the bell housing, along with a noisy spigot bearing I figured that failure was looming.

Along with a new clutch, flywheel spigot and thrust bearing the other bits tackled during the job was at the diff/gearbox where the sub axle seal was leaking and required replacing, fresh gearbox oil and a new oil filter. The filter had totally jammed itself into the box, Aldous had to take off the reverse gear cover and drive it out from the inside. The hydraulic clutch pipe caused a bit of a headache where the threads stripped one end required a new union at the bell housing while at the top the thread had to be re-cut. Final item on the extras list (other than the ARB kit covered in a previous post) is brand new brake lines custom made in Kunifer which will never rot.

Most shocking was the flywheel which was covered in hot spots. Clutch plates had worn thin but not too bad... also the brake lines were very rusty to the point of bursting - easy one to check as the lines to the rear run along the nearside of the car, the location of them leaves them very exposed to grit and salt on the road which is probably why they were so bad.

Finished result is that the clutch pedal is much lighter with the new clutch tangs having more spring in them. Car feels more fluid and less clunky, Aldous did great on adjusting the gear linkage; throw between gears feels much shorter and precise.... overall gear changes are much quicker

Just a note on the new X pipe - it sounds fantastic getting a lot of compliments while the old pipe got none. Sound clip coming soon

I see you went for the Hill's thrust bearing Fifty,I got the standard one in the end, it's been fine but the last couple of times I've got in the car first thing the pedal has been a bit soft at the top of the travel,ok after a bit of use I've checked the brake fluid level which is at max marker so lost none so I think the master cylinder is at fault.

What have you been doing since May!!

Lol. I saw you in Le Mans in June :)

I guess an update is quite overdue. I got the wheels sorted just before Le Mans to what I believe is a good standard, paint finish has held up and there is no vibration at speed. All four wheels had damage apparently

Over the summer I was using the 4200 daily to get to the train station which made the car feel somehow quite mundane... I almost fell out of love with it until I stepped on the gas to 7K

Over last summer while AV was on holiday I went to Matt at SportsItalia to have a power steering leak sorted they replaced the entire length of pipe with a second hand one from ES which has finally resolved that problem. While they had the car they replaced the front brake lines due to corrosion, some basic rust prevention and PDR.

Here is a fond memory from June 2019

Looking good , another sparkly Mas on the way ready for spring

Cheers mate. The car is booked in to see AV in a couple of weeks for a service and MOT. Looking forward to having it back on the road especially if it is going to be nice and quiet on the roads for a few months.

Next thing I am looking for is GS seats and door cards potentially dash... Its a tricky one as I don't want a mismatched coloured interior nor do I want to spend mega bucks on a full interior or retrim

Out of interest do you or anyone else know which ferrari the GS wheel came from? Stock 4200 wheel is F550... Is it the GS wheel from the 550 with the handling pack?

GS steering wheel was another silly impulse buy... Always wanted one on my car but the prices are silly. One came up for sale privately in Hong Kong and I got it for only £380 and it didnt get stopped by customs. I will probably fit it myself when the weather gets a little warmer.

Used to be on the button with all this stuff , 5 years on the twain has left me back on the leaning curve a bit , but I know a man who does , he has a 550 with the handling pack , let me ask

Time to do a couple of jobs that I have been putting off for a while on the car and they are starting to annoy me.

The ratchet on the hand brake lever has failed and has become unreliable (handbrake can drop at its own will) so I ordered up a new one. It took nearly a month to arrive and when it did the date code on the brand new factory part is March 2003 so plan ahead on getting parts in as the factory is being slow in fulfilling orders

Arrived in the post yesterday

73946

Looks pretty simple to fit, remove centre consol the two fixing bolts and the handbrake cable runs through that hole and I guess bolts in. I will take a few photos specific to the installation of the handbrake for anyone else tackling this job

One point to note is that the classico model cars have a considerably different design on the handbrake lever compared to the revised version. The newer version has a sealed off ratchet which is probably more robust/less prone to fail like the ratchet on the old version.... Handbrake for revised 4200: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/313143245683

I will also be fitting a switched cable from the passenger footwell fuse box to the boot for the exhaust valve controller so I'll be removing the passenger seat and rear seats to get access to underneath the carpet.

I was supposed to get all this done earlier this week when I had some time off booked but the part took so long to arrive I'll have to do it on the August bank holiday weekend in a few weeks.

On a side note if anyone is wondering what the GS Wheel looks like in a manual 4200 here is a photo (excuse the poor light in my garage)... Highly recommended upgrade

Hi Fifty,

I have a 2003 4200 CC and the handbrake is a bit 'dodgy' towards the top of the travel. Was the installation as easy as you expected? Was the handbrake an outrageous price?

Thanks for the pointers. I had new shoes fitted and the handbrake adjusted when I bought it and had it serviced (as no history). It’s probably ‘OK’ but if it’s a simple job and not too pricey I might give it a go. Not this week though as having just had the clutch done I’m looking to sell a kidney....
