A new extreme sports car will be built by Maserati to rival the M5 built by BMW.

That's the latest hot car news coming from Italy.
We're talking pasta vs. sauerkraut.
Elegance vs. epiphany.
Tradition vs. exploring.

Bottom line -- whether you are into the idea of a Maserati competing head to head with a BMW M series car on the road and track depends on what (exactly) you have a taste for aesthetically and intellectually. Both are sure to be hot cars, each with its own unique European car design and flavor.

If you've had trouble figuring out if the Maserati Quattroporte was a closer rival to the BMW M5 or the 7 Series, the latest news from Modena ought to help. As part of the Fiat Group's comprehensive five-year plan – which already includes several new Alfa Romeos and no fewer than six new Ferraris – Maserati has revealed plans to build a new sub-Quattroporte sedan.

Targeting the likes of the M5, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and the Audi RS6, a new sedan is set to slot in below the existing Quattrporte in both size and price. Reports place the entry price for the new four-door at at less than €55,000 ($74k), significantly less than the $120k starting price for the current Quattroporte.

In addition, plans are also underway for a new full-size Quattroporte, giving buyers in the market for an exotic Italian super-saloon twice the variety to choose from. Expect the next-generation QP, then, to go slightly farther up-market to make way for its upcoming kid brother.

In this auto writers humble opinion, such a car will bring excitement to the exotic auto market absolutely. While the QP status is more refined and can be marketed to a wider variety of drivers (including women, families, executives, and those simply in the market for a unique luxury car model that is larger), the new more extreme sports car model appeals to drivers who are likely to be younger (or younger at heart) and more daring.

No, I cant find any visuals, but there must be some clues. Loz recons the new car is a 2 seater Spyder, cant see it myself, but he recons he saw a mule on a recent factory tour and was told that that was the new maser by a worker.

I have seen this:

It would tread on the GTS toes and is not fitting the M5 platform

This car is custom built by Touring in Milan (based on GS platform)...don't think it's the same as the new one being discussed.

Here is another interesting snippet:

Insiders suggest that, if given the green-light, the new sports car would likely receive a revised version of Maserati’s 4.2L V8, detuned to around 350bhp and mated to a semi-automatic gearbox with paddle-shifters. With the GranTurismo growing in size to rival mega-coupes like the Mercedes CL, there’s definitely a gap in Maserati’s lineup for a new smaller performance model.

Detuned!!! brilliant, wind, it back up to 425bhp again and nail the GTS due to the lighter weight.

It would appear that Fiat want to get Maserati production up to 11k units per year, and this would be a very easy way to do it.

QP further up market...Christ a GTS already costs 90k plus......Funny but seen many group tests with the QP against the M5. Always found this add as I always put it more as a 7 size car than 5. Love the idea of a car aiming for the M5...If it can have the Iatian style and flair and the performance and handling and quality to kit M5's bum it should fly out the show room. This I would imagine will be a very important car to Maserati so will need to be right.

If Maserati want this new model to complete with the German torque-monsters, 350bhp won't cut mustard I'm afraid.

Agree, current M5 500bhp..My E39 is 400bhp...so needs to be 450ish at least.
