Exhausted!

Thought i'd post something (finally... delayed, etc...) about my exhaust 'journey'. Alright I know this isnt reality TV so everything doesn't have to be a journey but here we go...

I always wanted to get more noise from the exhaust, being a bit jealous of the Granturismo noise that the 4200 just doesn't have even from the same engine. So one of the first things I did after buying the car was fit a Larini X pipe. Was wary of fitting the full Larini as people talk about it making too much noise and being drony... not to mention the silly money that Larini ask for everything they sell.

So the X pipe was a nice but subtle improvement, makes it 'raspier' but maybe not much increase in actual volume except at high revs. Liked it, but still wanted more.

Next phase, saw a custom (unkown origin) SS sports exhaust rear boxes for sale for a fraction of a Larini cost, so thought i'd give that a go. This fitted easy to the original brackets with slight fiddling by a local garage, and looked and sounded good. Definitely louder without being OTT. (PLUG ALERT: these custom back boxes are currently for sale by me, see parts adverts on here :as002:)

But still I felt I wanted a bit more... though only if I could turn it down when required in case too loud? The answer.... Gransport valved boxes of course! With the key fob remote valve control!! But of course, a well priced one had to be found... Step in Stuart AKA Soprano Stu who just happened to want to sell me a pair of GS boxes at very reasonable price!
....Ah, but I hear you say, what are you doing Delmonte you F-wit, the GS boxes are not very loud, and probably quieter than your custom boxes! And of course you would be correct in that assertion, which is where the talented Jason of Jaren Metalworks comes in! You can find him on Ebay just search 4200 exhausts you'll find him advertising refurbed GS exhausts. He takes your exhaust boxes, fully reburbs them, either GS valved or unvalved 4200, but also opens them up and removes all the 'wadding' inside, making them freer flowing releasing lots more lovely noise....but still baffled, not being 'straight through' a la Larini (which are empty cans). Cost for this job a very reasonable 300-odd-quid, and when I got them back I was mightily impressed:
77639

They really are like new, and if anything the pics don't do justice. Very impressive. Thankyou Jason!
So the boxes were fitted, along with the key fob valve remote control kit, (about £40 off ebay) and it sounds fantastic! With valves open, really growly on startup, and throughout the rev range, the loudest i've had yet and still 'supercar-ish' rather than 'muscle car-ish' which is what I wanted. In fact its borderline too loud, but hey I've got the valve control, which takes it down a notch, whenever I want. (Which isn't often :mock8:)

Anyway, thats it. I'm now at the end of my exhaust journey and do not need any more noise. A happy ending. The morals of the story:
Get an X pipe. This is compulsory.
If you want louder but sub-Larini/straight through madness, get your boxes modded by Jaren metalworks.
If you want louder but adjustable for quieter, get GS boxes then get them modded by Jaren metalworks.
If you want louder than standard but not as loud as modding your boxes, and want the nice look of SS custom exhausts, or don't want to mod your original boxes, buy my old SS boxes

I keep looking at your back boxes on eBay, but I just had a service so a bit skint this month
No worries Josh. Save your pennies I'm sure they'll still be here in another month or 2, stuff like this doesn't sell quickly I find! But they are a great value option. If you want them contact me on here rather than ebay, better price for you and a bit more money in my pocket not paying Ebay tax ;)

I like those - always thought an exhaust was just an exhaust and never fancied the Larini markup. Can he do QP5 DS?

Is there no way of the the valves being vacuum controlled like the coupes - don't really like the key fob control idea but if it's the only option.....

I’ve always found Larini reasonably priced. Contacted them direct for sports cats and they knocked £100 off as I bought the x pipe as well.
although when my car went in for further exhaust work, the exhaust fabricator commented on them feeling cheap.. but then again he would!

He did my qp boxes. No valves but stripped of wadding and the spring loaded valve opened permanently. Had mine blacked again but he can polish if you want them shiny. No way of controlling them without serious mods.

Good to hear. Been on a similar journey on my 4200. Went big and early by doing secondary decat race pipes then rear box delete with straight through rear sections. Left the standard silenced xpipe. Sounded great but was a little too much so wanted it dialed down a bit.

Then chapter 2 began. Thanks to Tony who I bought a lovely set of valved rear Larini's from. Got Aldous to fit a remote valved kit which is a little more involved on the 4200 of course as there are no stock valves. He created a lovely situation to tap into the existing vacuum pipes on the front left all the way to the back. Secondary decat pipes left in place.

The sound is so much nicer and tons quieter so almost spot on to what I wanted. It is actually a smidge too quiet on noisy but spot on in quiet mode. So leaves room for my hopefully final change. To replace the stock silenced xpipe with a new unsilenced xpipe. I think that would then be spot on.

The Larini's do look a lovely quality item so can see why they cost what they do.

I reckon I am there then.

There is a rev controlled option. I think it's FD but worth googling for

It is a kit from Larini that taps into the exhaust valve controller to the throttle to provide a more OEM solution (valves closed under 4500RPM and open above unless manually overridden). It was quite expensive last time I checked (over 500+VAT)

This is great to hear @Delmonte I may get him to do my GS boxes one day, so another satisfied customer for Jason! for those of you with short memories this is the same Jason that some of you were quick to slag off because of his E-bay advert for his x-pipe the other day !!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

For those with even shorter memories it was the questionable method of advertising "anyone tried one of these" thread that was in question.

I tend to find the hey i make these if anyone is interested approach works so much better and is an honest and open way to advertise on the forum.

It wasnt slagging off as you put it. I thought that had been resolved on the original thread but apparently not.:rolleyes::rolleyes:
