Thought i'd post something (finally... delayed, etc...) about my exhaust 'journey'. Alright I know this isnt reality TV so everything doesn't have to be a journey but here we go...
I always wanted to get more noise from the exhaust, being a bit jealous of the Granturismo noise that the 4200 just doesn't have even from the same engine. So one of the first things I did after buying the car was fit a Larini X pipe. Was wary of fitting the full Larini as people talk about it making too much noise and being drony... not to mention the silly money that Larini ask for everything they sell.
So the X pipe was a nice but subtle improvement, makes it 'raspier' but maybe not much increase in actual volume except at high revs. Liked it, but still wanted more.
Next phase, saw a custom (unkown origin) SS sports exhaust rear boxes for sale for a fraction of a Larini cost, so thought i'd give that a go. This fitted easy to the original brackets with slight fiddling by a local garage, and looked and sounded good. Definitely louder without being OTT. (PLUG ALERT: these custom back boxes are currently for sale by me, see parts adverts on here )
But still I felt I wanted a bit more... though only if I could turn it down when required in case too loud? The answer.... Gransport valved boxes of course! With the key fob remote valve control!! But of course, a well priced one had to be found... Step in Stuart AKA Soprano Stu who just happened to want to sell me a pair of GS boxes at very reasonable price!
....Ah, but I hear you say, what are you doing Delmonte you F-wit, the GS boxes are not very loud, and probably quieter than your custom boxes! And of course you would be correct in that assertion, which is where the talented Jason of Jaren Metalworks comes in! You can find him on Ebay just search 4200 exhausts you'll find him advertising refurbed GS exhausts. He takes your exhaust boxes, fully reburbs them, either GS valved or unvalved 4200, but also opens them up and removes all the 'wadding' inside, making them freer flowing releasing lots more lovely noise....but still baffled, not being 'straight through' a la Larini (which are empty cans). Cost for this job a very reasonable 300-odd-quid, and when I got them back I was mightily impressed:
They really are like new, and if anything the pics don't do justice. Very impressive. Thankyou Jason!
So the boxes were fitted, along with the key fob valve remote control kit, (about £40 off ebay) and it sounds fantastic! With valves open, really growly on startup, and throughout the rev range, the loudest i've had yet and still 'supercar-ish' rather than 'muscle car-ish' which is what I wanted. In fact its borderline too loud, but hey I've got the valve control, which takes it down a notch, whenever I want. (Which isn't often )
Anyway, thats it. I'm now at the end of my exhaust journey and do not need any more noise. A happy ending. The morals of the story:
Get an X pipe. This is compulsory.
If you want louder but sub-Larini/straight through madness, get your boxes modded by Jaren metalworks.
If you want louder but adjustable for quieter, get GS boxes then get them modded by Jaren metalworks.
If you want louder than standard but not as loud as modding your boxes, and want the nice look of SS custom exhausts, or don't want to mod your original boxes, buy my old SS boxes
