Engine/gearbox mounts for QP

Good morning all,

It has been a very enjoyable two weeks with my 'new' 2005 QP. However, the vibration definitely needs to be dealt with. Engine mounts appear to be the cause, but can worn gearbox mounts also contribute? The car is getting a few things done on Friday, and I will ask them to check all the mounts before sourcing the parts.

Is Eurospares the cheapest for engine/gearbox mounts?

Thanks in advance,

~Chris

It'll be the engine mounts and they are a pig to change on an early QP. If you're going to DIY then take real care removing the subframe bolts and it you're paying someone else to do the job then check all the bolts are back in. It's very easy to snap one off and I've seen a few where people haven't bothered to drill the broken stud out.

Nice to 'meet' you Voicey. You are highly regarded here, from what I've seen, and are reportedly nearby in Chiswick, no?

Thank you for the advice. Would be nice to have a chat. Can you message me your phone number if this is a job you can do?

Thank you,

~Chris

I'm no longer working in Chiswick - I parted company (amicably) with the workshop at the start of this year. Right now I'm taking a well earn't break - sorry!

Hi guys & girls,

Just wanted to update you and thank you all again for the shared wisdom of the forum. I just got the car back after a bit of a nightmare with the engine mounts (as Voicey predicted!) when one of the seized bolts refused to come out. The workshop eventually succeeded but it added about 3 hours labour to the bill. Still, she is now vibration-free and in perfect working order...until the next problem :)

So, in the 4 weeks of ownership, I've spent about £2K though this included new engine mounts, gearbox and brake fluid change, new door strikers, new bonnet and boot gas struts (got the cheap bonnet ones recommended on this forum. Thanks again!), new reverse lever mechanism (Cheaper Hill Engineering version) and various other service related items. I guess it could have been worse!

I'm finally ready to enjoy her to the full ;)

glad it's all fixed. Chris, can you describe the noise a little? I'm wondering if I'm in the same boat, albeit in a GT.

and Voicey, is the 2012 Granturismo Convertible the same sort of pain as the QP to replace?

thanks!

It wasn't noise. It was purely vibration in the cabin. It's not completely eradicated at high revs, but there is very little vibration until about 4,000rpm now. Before the engine mounts were replaced, the vibration was very noticeable from low revs too.

The issue is the subframe bolts get corroded in place. Obviously this gets worse with age so I would like to think you have a good chance they'll unscrew easily (as you have a 2012 car).

Good morning Voicey,

While there has been a significant reduction in vibration since fitting new engine mounts, is the vibration I'm still feeling at high revs due to clutch/gearbox or propshaft?

Thanks,

~C

Is the 4000rpm significant?
The earlier QP engine comes "on cam" after 5000rpm, does the later engine have similar valve timing? Could it be anything variation related?

No, the vibration I'm talking about is not 'engine' related, but clearly from 'out of balance' forces, either due to clutch or propshaft, now that the engine is securely 'tied down'.

that is good news. The prop shaft is always going at engine speed so is the clutch so not always easy to the certain of these things.

Drop it into neutral to see if it is related to rear axle / diff. Noise will change if it is in the axle, stay them same if its clutch / propshaft.

Good suggestion! Will try that on my next drive. It was nice to finally be able to redline la Contessa yesterday :)

good point.
Vibration in the cabin "at speed" can be heard to pinpoint. Airflow over the car can generate a hum, one of my former cars had this at 70 mph.

It's not speed related, it's rev related, and clearly an 'out of balance' issue within the whole transmission. I remember the same issues in my old Alfa GTV 6 and it was usually a propshaft coupling to blame :)

Exactly how I know ;) Lost a donut on the 116 while making progress :D
