Wet weather, dropping temperatures, summer tyres, sport manual, 1st and 2nd gear, roundabouts and junctions......

What always amazes me on the QP and GranTurismo is how much the MSP is retarded when you hit the Sport button.

You're an "ice-mode" user much of the time, aren't you Bob? All these wet leaves on the ground make that even more wise!

I am indeed, works fine on busy roads, in town etc. In fact I never use normal auto. It's ice auto or sport manual

Oooh, nasty, made a proper mess there and the bank.

Did it get repaired (I think not) or salvaged?

What did you hit?

I hit a tree - its still there, insurance paid out in full, it got salvaged - someone bought it to repair as far as I know.
I posted the picture in another thread "how to remove front bumper"

Have experienced wheelspin at 80 in the rain when in sport mode, so you do need to be careful on full throttle. I keep meaning to sign up for a skid pan session; must get around to it someday.

Dem like you I had a mark 1 323i and had to spend all winter driving around with a 3x2 paving slab in the boot otherwise it wouldn't point forwards.

The Rockingham day tomorrow will be my third session and I still won't drive on the public roads with traction control off.

That said, I only ever drive the Lambo in "Corsa" (race) mode as I prefer the quicker gear change. It does turn down the traction control but only enough to give you a warning wiggle.

The secret with high powered cars is to think of the throttle as a tap that you open slowly and carefully rather than a switch that's either on or off. And also not to jump off the throttle at the first sign of a slide as you'll just move the weight from the rear to the front wheels, which will induce a slide. Oh.... and always expect it to try to kill you any second.

BMW's - you guys where spoilt!!! try a 3.0L S Capri - horse cart leaf springs at the rear - several hundred kilos of iron at the front, skinny tyres (185/60 x14")

Handled like a sack of spuds

When I lived in London, my 328i Coupe was in for a service and the 318i saloon loan car was pretty gutless (I thought) but I still managed to get it facing backwards on a wet Vauxhall one way system. Lesson learned!

I worked for eight years on Durham Street in that one-way system, my office overlooked the corner you are probably referring to, the number of cars I saw pointing the wrong way when it rained was astonishing. You could be guaranteed at least one a day.

Yes the Rockingham facilities are great for understanding what it's like after loosing traction and how to bring the car back into control, however even then on any highway, if you go into a slide the direction of the slide will not be the direction you were previously travelling (i.e. parallel to those nasty kerbs) whether you catch it or not.

Take care out there now that the weather is changing, particularly if you drive a 3200.

If you are driving a Maser and have not undertaken some form of advanced driving training including a bit of 'on the edge' stuff like skid control then you should get some booked pronto imo.
