"In my experience the average punter either cannot afford artwork or will not pay a reasonable price no matter what the subject. You need to target those who can afford to pay. They generally stand out from the crowd, just look for the designer leather jackets & the Rolex chronometric watches and a key ring which says Ferrari. Our Lotus club tried to auction some excellent artwork of Lotus cars on track captured by one of our members who is the local distributor for Leica,Nikon,Hasselblad etc. We didn't get one bid.
At track days we have professionals taking excellent action shots of your car. An 8 x 12 print costs A$20 available on the day and I don't know how the photographer makes a profit,so few purchase the prints.
Anyhoo,best of luck,love your work."
Couldn't agree more. We've found in the past that the effort and time spent trying to seek out clients like that is rarely worth it. Maybe if I was starting out, but we already have an established business in social photography. I used to be that guy, taking pics on spec and hoping to sell them, but not anymore thank god!
