Differences between UK and USA

As I'm doing more and more stuff with the US, I'm seeing so many things that the do differently to us. Besides to obvious stuff (guns, politics, religion etc), I can't quite work out why for two countries which are so similar are so different in so many ways.
I thought I would make a thread as there is no rant thread. Although some might not necessarily be rants.

Spelling. It's English for god sake, not American!
Driving on the wrong side of the road, they're following the French lead!

I received a letter from the IRS this morning , what's going on with the paper sizes??? Just use A4 like the rest of the world!

Any others?

@DLax69 you'll be able to chip in with a few on the flip side!

I suppose it’s to do with evolution. It can go either way, as is very apparent. But there are other examples like South Africa - at least they went for the decimal system, not some half arsed compromise - too much history can be a burden, just as much as change can be detrimental. Progress is littered with disastrous mistakes I guess.
Remember the failed Mars Orbiter in 1999 that used the wrong combination of Metric and Imperial? You do wonder what system is going to be used on Mars one day - will it be miles or km? They will have to figure that one out pretty soon.

But that was much too serious an answer

Well, @GeoffCapes, thanks for the opportunity. To start...well, where should I start?

Is the exchange rate so dreadful because you weigh your money?

Is there a good reason for having a direct connection to France, of all places?

Bangers and mash?

They have some very different rules in NA for their lighting, almost protectionist policies to keep foreign manufacturers out of their market - not exactly capitalism eh.

Cinnamon with everything. Unfailing politeness - well in New England anyway. What’s a rotary? Much fun on there at the end of the Lowell Connector, if I remember.

This I can relate to. However, their rules about excluding foreign manufacturers is 'interesting' to say the least.

UK manufacturers aren't classed as foreign! :lol2::lol2::lol2:

Being named Robin, and it being a girl's name predominantly there, and thinking they were in for an easy time, the look when I walked in

I was gonna say something about workaholics here, but most of you seem to have that down. However...your holidays are definitely better!

I like bangers and mash...and fish and chips!...it's just that the name (again) doesn't cross quite as well...

Beyond pub food, what would you say is the UK's most notable contribution to global cuisine?

Some of France is quite nice.

Bangers and Mash is food from the gods!
...to be fair, I've not been in France since Geo. W. Bush was President. I thought he would be the worst President of the US that I would ever live to see. OOOPS! That said, no matter where I went...from Brest, to Paris, to Villefranche...I could not even get through a meal without being pilloried/badgered about someone I neither voted for, nor supported, even after making that clear...including from the folks I was doing business with!

But you're correct, the countryside is nice; the coast is beautiful...
