Just wondered your thoughts on changing my daily driver.
Currently run a 58 Reg VW Phaeton 3.0D (my spydercomes out on sunny days only!), doing 500 miles as week.
Been a great car and got a fantastic deal when it was 5 months old. unlike on my previous 7 series. Really underated car with all the toys ,double glazing ,radar cruise control, cooling massaging seats etc etc. Anyway its 3 years old next month and toying with buying a nearly new one again great deals out there or splashing out a bit more and going for a lexus 460 se-l (seen 59 plate with 25k miles for 37K -75 k new!) .
Thoughts ?

Werent these the test bed for the Bentley I seem to remember?

A friend of mind has been saying they are the deal of the century, for me the styling does nothing I appreciate it for what it is.

Dunno, Range Rover, sport maybe? The Lexus is a good call, a bit different from the run of the mill.

How about holding on to the Phaeton for another year, 18 months and going for the baby QP with the Chrysler V6D in it?

Test Drive the XJ before you make a decision, fantastic motorway cruiser and the 3 ltr diesel is plenty big enough and economical. Lovely finish inside, (apart from the switch gear around the steering wheel) and just a nice place to be. Prices are sub 40k now for 2010 cars so it really is a bargain buy. If the roads around here (Helford in Cornwall) were a little wider I would have one on my driveway now :(

Oh and don't worry, I don't work for Jag! I Just like this generation of their cars, they seem to have got things right at last :)

Mechanically and drivability that could well be so but its debatable , forsure they need a good designer , on that score they are as mundane as a Mondeo jelly mould , seen more flare on Mungo Jerry but then each to his own

Good call Andrew, forgot about that one, very nice car and multi award winning from memory.

Still whiffs a bit of old boardrooms and pipes, but definitely on the up.

Yes a lot of the Phaeton switch gear and dash layout as on the Bentley Continental and indeed when in the body shop having a ding repaired the chap mentioned that apart from engine 90% ths same .Exact same chasis.
Had thought about new XJ and do admit to liking the looks but leaning towards the Lexus just love all the gadgets!

It'd be the Jag for me as well. The new XJ is an icon - just shows how subjectve design is, Loz thinks it's mundane, I think it's iconic :)

Down the road for me and when I need to commute, the last series of XJ will be my daily driver. Prices must be getting very soft now...

Am i really that much of a lost cause , interior average for todays standards , power wise more than ample , and i hear one everyday as my neighbour goes off to work as the stratstone jag sales manager Mk and they do sound lovely , in competition he always blips outside my house as i do his and no qualms on that point but looks , sort of short back and sides to me from the 80's/90's sieirre /mondeo days

This to me says iconic XJ shape

New XJ, absolutely disgusting, it makes a BMW 7 series look pretty.

XF is a good shout, Lexus GS450 Hybrid is very good, maybe a Hybrid but does 0-60 in sub 6 seconds and has 346bhp plus the build quality will be second to none.

There is a Phaeton for sale at my local VW dealer, it is a W12 model as well, all yours for 13.5k. If you can afford the petrol, what a machine for the money.
