cut out in air-box?

I posted this query on 'another' forum but wondering whether I'll be further enlightened here...

Basically, there is a small rectangular slot cut out of the air-box (probably 8 cm by 1 cm). It's near the top end of the box and the air filter can be seen through it. As the slot looked like it was cut by a monkey with a blunt stanley knife, I decided to patch the 'hole' in with some gaffer tape.

I've driven the car a couple of times and I haven't noticed any difference. Unless... well ok I *think* the engine might sound quieter. But not sure at all and probably all psychological as I'm trying to notice differences (and the engine / exhaust note tends to vary anyway depending on ambient air temperature and humidity etc.).

So any ideas as to its purpose?

Cheers,

Dolo

Dolo, I have not read the other thread on the other forum, so your getting my unbiased opinion. I think we are safe to say, that the cutout is not standard and has been done for one of 2 reasons.

1. to attach a snorkel or some other aftermarket breather.
2. To create induction sound.

Now, 1 I think we can probably dismiss, so I would guess that some monkey has cut this hole create an induction wooooooosh and you are correct, the engine will sound quieter, as you are not hearing the noise from the inlet side of the engine. Imagine what it would sound like if you cut a hole in your exhaust. Its a similar process, although the exhaust side being far louder.

The induction sucks air pretty hard, so you might find the tape could get sucked into the engine...not good. Really, as induced air filtration is so critical, I would get a new one, or at least, get a used one from David Askew, it wont cost much.

Hope this helps, and can you let us know what response you have had from the other forum?

I replied on the other side, only to say that I also have this cut out so it's not a unique situation. I could only guess it had something to do with a dealer modification to allow for air flow or release water or other trapped matter?

My only tuppence worth would be to observe that it looks like this is a standard treatment applied to all cars. it must therefore be for a reason so I would be concerned that your "repairing" it may expose you to the problem the fix was designed to address (e.g. water ingestion). For that reason alone I would be very wary about leaving your repair in place.

Just a thought.

In the last 3 years ive fitted 2 brand new ones to the 4200 and the gransport and i can testament to no cut out in the new articles , would of thought a cut out could affect the mass air flow thingy

If your worried about water ingress i would drill some small holes in the very bottom of the box

Interesting replies all. Seems there is a confusion about whether this cut out is OEM or customised. I will try and call the local indy (Migliore in Bromsgrove) about this who are pretty knowledgeable.
