Cure for depression

I had almost reached the point of clinical depression after having read every one of the 200 odd pages of the centenary thread with some of you lot banging on about what a hoot it was. Then to add insult to injury, some thoughtless ******* started a centenary photo thread just to further remind me of the fact that I had missed it due to it clashing with a house move.

Over the weekend, whilst reorganising all my worldly goods, I found some raw HD GoPro footage from a trip earlier this year. Having a few days off, I have been frantically video editing away for therapeutic purposes and thought this particular one may be appropriate to post here. For the noises if nothing else.

Apologies as it is a bit lengthy, but it was purely intended for my own personal self-indulgence and mental well-being.

I like the sound track at the beginning and how it relates to your misery - "you can't always get what you want..."!

What microphone did you use on the GoPro? A bit of wind noise when on the front of the car, but you can still hear the engine a bit.

It just happened to be playing on the radio in the car and I thought it apt.

No external mike, I just stick the go pro in front of the grille where it seems to pick up induction noise quite clearly. Dont know the answer to wind noise though as I have tried loads of different mounting points to minimise it, to no avail.

I bought an external mic and a wind sock thing in order to reduce/eradicate wind noise. As yet I've failed to succeed. I might next try to mount the mic on a long lead at the back of the car so it has some protection and makes the most of picking up the Larini/Days of Thunder sound track.

Let me know if it works, as that is exactly what I was thinking. Ideally I want video capture from the front and audio from the back.

wind socks are fine in light - med wind if not moving but at 70mph plus?............about as much use as a chocolate fireguard imo:saifi3:
to capture exhaust sound you would need to know the wind dead spots at the back of the car........unless you have a wind tunnel, it is down to trial and error where to put the mic.

Thanks, Greg. I'll have to try a few different places and see what works.

MAF I am thinking of running the mike wire under the headlining and through the boot and mount it on the dead spot on the rear bumper.

Keep the go pro in the car like where Merrian had it then you can choose cabin narration or unadulterated pipes.

That's a really fun drive, I did it and saw 1 police car the whole journey...parked in a service area. Came over to look at the car, nodded in appreciation and carried on. Sweeping between tunnels through mountains and bridges spanning gorges, it's beautiful.

Would a surface mounted mic (boundary mic) not work better than a direct microphone?

Not that I know much about recording but all the videos I've watched the better sounding ones are with mic in the car windows open.

Agreed and fair comment. If you are poncing around Knightsbridge at 25MPH, revving the tits off a hired Lambo for ***** and giggles on youtube, then that is most definitely the best way. However, trying to, errr.... make some progress on a 100 mile long coastal road with the windows down isn't my idea of having fun any more. If it was I would have bought a Caterham.

FWIW last time I did that road I was on a Suzuki GXSR-1000, ten years ago and it was awesomely more noisy, windy and scary, but this time (for some reason), I was trying to convince myself that I have grown up a bit and wanted to feel a bit like Brett Sincair, whilst retaining the ability to smoke the odd Benson and Hedges and to converse with my passengers whilst driving. Like I said above, in hindsight, I would like to have the mic and the cam at different parts of the car but the GoPro came with nothing but a few sticky mounting patches so I just used them all because they were free.

Life is a compromise after all. If it wasn't you would have just watched a Quentin Tarantino presentation of me doing the Fiori in a Miura with Angelina Jolie in the passenger seat.

I'm neither young or handsome (some would say). It wasn't an MC12, and admttedly the footage is, by my own admission, amateurish, but given that last year, the car, the camera and the whole trip taking in 4 alpine passes, Monza, Modena, Maranello, Sant'agata and the Monaco GP cost me less than 12k AND I still own the Maserati. That to me, is value for money.

Well, reading that post has certainly brightened my day! 12k, all that fun, and you get to keep the Maser - what's not to like? :)

What I have watched is video of bruntingthorp and someone recording when they held recording device probably a phone and not the driver out the window just a lot of noise but inside the car you could hear the car. I wasn't haveing a dig at how you where recording as I know nothing about it never done it. But when I drive through them tunnels I'll have my windows down to hear the noise bouncing of the walls. Maybe not all the way but hey each to there own.
