Cracked Ghibli Headlights why ?

Evening,

I think Jim (209) and I have solved this mystery.

It is always the nearside headlight on RHD cars, Jim has gone through 3 and I know of several others. Offside lights have been available through Eurospares but until recently there have been no nearside ones left, because they keep getting broken. It can not be coincidence or bad driving that has caused Jim to go through three on one side but none on the other...............................

The problem is not the bonnet release mechanisim, it is either a fault with the lights or the cars. The lights have 3 brackets two on the front at the top one on the rear at the bottom.

When you fit the offside light all three brackets touch the car at the same time, and when fitted you are left with a 7-10mm gap or so above the light when the bonnet is shut. When you fit the nearside light the bottom/rear bracket touches first, and as you push the light into place it tilts/rotates upwards/backwards until the two front brackets touch the car. When you fit all the screws and close the bonnet there is a 7mm gap on the outside of the light, but the inside is very close if not touching the bonnet. When i close my bonnet gently you can here the metal scraping glass. You can see that a few hard slams of the bonnet eventually is going to hit the glass and crack it.

Now it is either the rear bracket welded to the car is too far forward or the bracket on the light is too far backward either way these two are touching too early. I did not fancy cutting into the chassis so i removed the bracket from the headlight, it is only held on by 4 rivets and are easy to drill out. Mine now fits perfectly giving a 7-10mm gap along the top of the light and no contact with the bonnet.

All you need to do is drill new holes into the plastic of the light and then re-rivet the bracket 10-15mm further forward. It maybe that you tape the bracket onto the light and then offer it into position, if the light almost sits on the bumper, play around with the brackets position until all 3 brackets touch at the same time.

This does not seem to be an issue on all cars, Jim's is chassis 209 and mine is 211, it could be that a batch of cars went out with the chassis bracket welded in the wrong place ? Although as Maserati had run out of lights it could be an issue on all RHD cars.

Meridian now have a supply of nearside lights, but as Jim has gone through 3 lights buying a new light is unlikely solve the problem.

I think the above is self explanatory, but will try to take some pictures to try and show what i mean.

Snap. Thanks for this. I had the same problem and noticed it after the car had not been used for some time and for once it was not my poor driving. BTW a guy at auto italia had fitted some Ferrari lights instead - honestly! It was a red early Ghibli in red colour.

Bob S (with the GOC) had mentioned this several times, he felt the 348/355/456/F40 pop up light is similar size and dimension. I have looked at them, and they might be but the fixing tabs are in the wrong place. You also appear to need the either the "Racing/Shamal" type surround or the GOC ones. There is an article on Enricos somewhere about using the Japanese market only headlights as they also come with surrounds.

If somebody ever comes across a damaged Ferrari one it would certainly be worth having a play with.

Hi guys.
The car was a M plate red Ghibli and the car well might be this one in the picture.
It was at this years AutoItalia and the owner had made a considerable saving over the Maserati price though I am not sure how much he had shopped around. I know when my light cracked for what I thought was no reason I had a couple of nights holding my credit card as early quotes were high.
Yorkshire now seems to gripped in an advance state of autumn
- I have a week in Lake District coming up and had hoped to take the cup up for some exercise.
I also found a note on the 75 asking me to call if I was interested in selling it. Somehow I think the price offered will be below the cost of a cup headlight!
Best wishes guys
Malcolm

they quoted a figure for buying the 75 off you in the note??!

outrageous!

add a couple of zero's and text 'em back!!

Actually- do you know; a parts guy at my main-dealers said to me years ago when I was buying my third headlight that I should try and find out what else they are used for and source them another way; I just laughed it off- Italian stuff doesn't tend to borrow headlights from other manufacturer's in my experience but reading about the Ferrari connection now makes we wonder about what he said...

F348 lights do fit, they were used in cars exported to japan & some open cups but you need to make up or butcher the rear pods that carry the them to fit a ghibli. Now they are available (very small number) I would just get the correct part Ross at meridien quoted me around £300.00 I think

My understanding is that for export models, the lights were a bit different and same as those on the F355.

Let me know if you need help.

Jim

Give Russ a call at meridien can't remember the exact price but they have a small number at the factory.

Peter

Peter, is it Russ or Ross ( top guy and very professional)? I know they have a list of older parts for sale up on Enricos page, will put up a link,

I think it's Ross and unless Henry's updated that list I don't think it'll include the most recent headlight revelation. I think it's from a couple of years ago...

Hi All,
I'm a newbie here...so go easy! I just thought I'd add my thoughts about the headlights having read this post.

Interesting to read that others always seem to have the N/S headlight crack. The exact smae thing has happend to the the N/S light on my Cup. Rather disapointingly this was after fitting a brand new unit and fitting it with headlight protecting film. I noticed it was cracked after being left out on a very hot day all day in the sun, but can't be 100% sure it wasn't cracked before.
I'll certainly take at a look at the installation on mine to see if the theroy of the bonnet catching the glass....certainly seems plausible.

Does anyone know if this is only on UK cars or dies the RH healight also seem to fail more frequently on non UK cars bacasue that side of the car is also subjected to a lot more bumps, jolts etc?

@Malcom P....nice collection of cars. I've also had a few 75 V6 Veloce models...great car, but not as great as a Ghibli Cup!

cheers

Nick
