Coupe prices - what's happening?

You can avoid the VAT by invoicing through Northern Ireland due to Sea Border Brexit shenanigans. Basically a VAT agent can do this and will charge circa 2% of the invoice total. Don’t ask me any more as I don’t know but it is commonplace now. Then all you need to pay is import VAT to France and not having paid UK VAT it’ll save you dosh.
Cheers Dicky I'm going to look into that :)

It could be a dog but it could be a bargain maybe.

Have you checked the cost of a new clutch these days? I think you are looking at £3k in parts alone. By the time all the while you are in there issues are addressed, I am guessing there is a 6 to 7k bill staring us in the face... Still a bargain if you want that as forever yours car and can swing the spanners, but for an average Joe, it's bound to be a disappointment guaranteed...

C pillar badges have been put back on the wrong way round for some reason. Could be painted or been detailed and put back on the wrong sides.

But surely, when buying a second hand car in the UK, there’s no VAT to pay anyway. So you’ll only pay the French import VAT?

That was certainly the case with the Landie I bought here and took to Mallorca. But interestingly, in Spain, they calculate the tax on what they value the car at, rather than the invoice. But luckily, in my case, they agreed with the invoice.

Either way, it makes sense to have the invoice figure as low as you sensibly can.

I bought a 2004 4200 Coupe earlier this year and have been watching prices since. Higher mileage, pre-facelift examples were going for under £7000, but lower mileage, facelift cars seem to be fetching £12000 or more - if the dealers are to be believed. I think that prices have bottomed, and now is as good a time as any to buy a coupe as there's ever been. I'm holding on to mine for a few years (until my age stops me getting insured) and spnding a bit on the cosmetics as it's sound mechanically. I still can't believe that one could buy such a beautiful car for pennies.

Good that you are happy. The issue the market seems to have is the risk that over, say, three years you could pay for the car twice, once to buy it and the same again in maintenance costs. I would not look at prices (but we all do!) as a Maserati offers best value owned over a long time and looked after appropriately, not too much but enough to maintain it's integrity and offer great summer fun. I got my GranTurismo undersealed and would recommend that if you have not already.

I bought the car which was corrosion treated in 2022, and had been driven only 3000 mile since. Brake discs and pads replaced all round in 2019. Clutch in 2018 (now worn 40%). It had the shocks replaced (with genuine OEM parts) all round in 2017, and the suspension bushes done at the same time. Bodywork is in great condition apart from the front chromed panel which is being rechromed at the moment. The interior is excellent now that the switches have been refurbished and the leather restored. The secondary air pump (or a sensor?) has an intermittent fault, but I've bought a replacement pump and will fit it this winter. No other faults according to a Maserati specialist who gave it a thorough inspection last month. I hope that it will be a great car for a few years. I'll use it regularly, and expect to spend about £2000 pa on the mechanicals and servicing. Fingers crossed that nothing drastic goes wrong!IMG_20240803_132613.jpgIMG_20240803_132551.jpgIMG_20240803_132645.jpg

Looks nice.

The softness of the market will see the unloved cars foibg the way of the biturbo.

But at the end of it, those that have been loved and cared for will survive.

No, you won't get your money back, but if forgetting how much it costs to maintain you don't loose that much if you buy right.

I guess you have to think at least you haven't dropped twice the initial purchase price on the equivalent 911, and then would be spending the same on maintenance and repairs anyway....

Unless we are talking something under 5 years old and under warranty.

Yes, that’s pretty much my experience: paid 12 for the 3200 and over 2.5 years of ownership I’ve spent 6, which included a very thorough going over at Emblem. I’m just into my second summer road trip through France and really enjoying the car. IMHO anyone looking to buy one of these should seriously consider the higher mileage cars, with good service history, that actually get used - ie with proven reliability - over anything else, particularly the low mileage high priced garage queens that will probably shake out a lot of faults as / if they’re ever really brought back into use …
