Coupe prices - what's happening?

With the youngest cars pushing 20 years old, many parts being discontinued and some being in back order for the best part of a year. Those that are not fully committed to the cause are taking the chance to bail out on a car that might never be 100% again. Particularly if you are not twirling your own spanners.

I suppose the good news is that the majority of these buyers will have bought into their cars at the lower end of the price scale. If you bought a £15k Coupe 10 years ago and got out at £7k, the depreciation is probably less than the maintenance costs.

Do you think another £5k as a contingency fund would be reasonable to rectify what's wrong with it and get this up to a decent state?

Impossible to say from this distance I would say. You could blow £5k pretty much straight away if there is a undisclosed problem.

Hmm, joined here to find out more on the QP V..... And now I find myself interested in the 4200 Coupe..... I could make a 2+2 work. :)

They are definitely more keenly priced at the moment than the QPs from what I am seeing.
Also this design is timeless IMO.
The pre face-lift QP V is showing its age in comparison.

Did any of the 4200 engines in the Coupe suffer from the variator issues?
I'm pretty sure the Coupe was an earlier engine version so am assuming not?

Yes & no…mostly no, though
Quite a few cars will briefly rattle on cold start up. I’ve heard a few rattle for several seconds…. It’s the variator that’s evacuated of oil before oil pressure builds. There are non return valves snd o- rings that can be easily replaced that helps. Its hard to diagnose with confidence if it’s the variator(s), or oil/ air bag.. Worth a search on here. There’s plenty of info. It’s not a fatal issue. It isnt your valve/timing train getting hammered, importantly. Hydraulic lifters are unaffected too. So unless , and maybe it happens, the variator gets so badly damaged that it fails to operate to adjust cam timing, it’s harmless, if a little irritating. ( caveat is rattling metal on metal is never harmless is it..? )
It falls into the “ they all do that , sir” camp imo.
It can be fixed but probably several grand for variators and oil/air bag, plus labour.

Get a PPI for £300_£400 and you have a fighting chance of dodging a bullet!
That’s scrap value. Get two!
Yeah. Typical me... I've started looking at actual cars to potentially buy when I'm not even ready. I told myself to spend a couple of months researching so that by the summer, when I'm in a position to buy I'd be well armed with all the knowledge.
Heart is ruling the head as usual!

Gorgeous car and very well written ad (I'm French) - makes you want to buy it. 40yo means historic tax class here so no ULEZ, etc. Shame it's in France.
I'm here in the Pays de Loire with my French lady and it's seriously tempting even Good Value too in my opinion.

I like the 4200 I find it more playful to drive and I love the look of it.
Had a QP5 GTS and it was great to drive in a different way.
It looks like you have plenty of time so try a few and see what fits your needs best.
There are plenty out there to choose from.
Good luck with it and have fun searching:)
