Council Tax. How much?

its not the councils to be fair, they have been subject to significant cuts from central government and need to raise money. I don’t like it anymore than the next person but am realistic that social care, care for the elderly and mental health care to name only a few needs funding. And yes, I also have to pay for garden waste and compost etc
Yes but surely that shouldn't be funded from council tax? Income tax etc should pay for that. Council tax should go to your community and pay for your area.

People need to look at the sums. Council tax is often only 20% of a council's revenue and it's actually not a lot of money as it is. The risk from a Corbyn style government is a re-basing to a percentage of an up to date assessment of values. That could make payments go up 300%+ so we all need to stop moaning!

The 'best' council tax I had was when I lived in Wandsworth in the 90's - big fat ZERO.

Yep, but we got out at weekends to go and get an ice cream on the High Street.

You gotta love a bit of day release, Bob. It's the spice o' life. Hopefully in between ice-creams you had time to do a bit of friendly robbin' and muggin', too. Give the local plod something to keep 'em busy and the council tax payers in neighbouring boroughs the thrill of knowing the plod part of their tax was not spent in vain.

Always went over the border into Lambeth for that...

Ours is currently £286 per month. They collect general rubbish fortnightly but don't send the recycling truck up our lane any more as it can't fit apparently. Even though the general rubbish truck is the same and we have had many bigger lorries up here on many occasions! They don't do any other street or tree maintenance. Oh, they did recently fill in some holes and left a right mess and mad it considerably worse than it was before they came!!

£280 a month
Gone up £10 a month per year since we moved
Band F - but by no means are we the second largest or best property in the area, there are several 8plus bedrooms properties worth 10x ours almost within sight

Mines £188 for 10 months, up £10 from last year. Largest percentage increase was 9.9% for the police which looks to be N.Yorks wide. Given the number of cars that get bent on Traffic Cops they need the money.

Seriously though what do people expect? We've had 40 years of lowering taxes to the point where there is little fat to cut, other than to get rid of those that are doing the fat cutting so they won't get rid of themselves, so tax goes up and we lose more services.

The German comedian Henning Wehn is quoted as saying; "we don't have charities in Germany, we pay taxes".

We need to get a grip and realise that we can't have good things for free unless we pay more tax. This is nice roads, decent services, etc. I remember when University education was free, prescriptions were free, (for those of us outside Scotland). The people that suffer the most here are those that have the least. The "load-a-money" culture from the '80s has become so embedded that we don't seem to care for anyone but ourselves any more.

Regarding pot holes. Surrey has a Web page where you can report pot holes and even upload photos. They are very effective. Not only that but they will contact you when the work is complete.

BTW ours came through, £235 for a band E, biggest rise was for the local parish council... 7%, not sure what they do...

I think many of us on here would agree we pay enough tax already don't we? I believe I do as a small business and individual. I don't see that if more tax was paid it would improve things much. Just a greater opportunity to waste more and be less. efficient than we already are.

Whilst I agree with Dean's statement especially on waste; I think that the issue is with larger companies not playing by the same rules that SMEs or individuals have to play by.
The likes of Amazon, Google Faceache etc...If they paid their share, we'd all have lower taxes.

It would be an interesting experiment to see that actual real world tax revenues generated from an individual or family that is paid into the pot.

At a guess I would say mine would be circa 50% and that would be based on a lower rate tax payer and very small business/ employer. I suspect it could be more but would need to work it out.

I'm sure some think tank has done this already. If not the National Audit Office

I think you could well be right. Didn't think if that. It could easily be the difference between us struggling to cover costs and covering the costs we need.

Wasting billions on nonsense projects like HS2 and the like really doesn't help matters.
