My rims are not in the greatest of shape and I could keep summer tyres on a really smart set & not have to worry about the winters getting salty and corroded etc.

I have both summer and winter tyres. The summer compounds are indeed softer above 7 Deg C but below that harden to the point of being slicks. The winter tyres (I have Pirelli Snowsports on my 4200) work specifically below 7 Deg and are fine on everything but compacted snow and ice. Then you need the studded tyres or snow chains.

I have just the one set of rims. There's no problem with re-balancing that I've experienced and tyre wear is even. I have my local tyre place change them over and for a fiver they even store the other set of tyres for the intervening 6 months. Naturally they then want me to buy any replacements from them but it's not compulsory. You actually save money in the long-term because winter tyres last and last so for the winter you're not putting any wear on your main summer tyres. It also means that I don't put all-weather tyres on for the summer, I put P-Zeros on, which is a nice soft compound and ideal for pushing on in good weather.

I have to say that I'd rather be able to drive at a slightly below normal speed with tyres that grip and instil confidence, rather than staying on tyres that don't grip and force me to drive at 10 mph to avoid skidding into the nearest obstacle.
