Cold tyres...

Not a problem on most vehicles but having driven > 100 miles to the meeting this morning I had no worries about transmision temps and I warmed the enging as we prepaired to leave at lunchtime from Ace... but cold tyres; wow I hadn't thought of that one.... I snaked my way up to the A40, lighting it up with every blip!

Back in the days I rode motorbikes I was always concious of the need to heat the tyres; note to self to remember that in the future...

Depends on your rubber. I have recently gone from Michelin PS2s to Continental Winter Contact TS 810S (great name). Big improvement in cold weather traction. Looking forward to seeing the PS2s again in April!

It was only reading something the other day that alerted me to the fact that standard tyres start to perform poorly below 7oC.

I had thought it was colder than that.

My new Pirellis (on the Honda) seem worse than the previous tyres.

...yup...it certainly seems so...which is even worse for us 390bhp types relying on some sort of contact...............cold tyre = slick tyre in real terms, anyone got any other info or links about this?

Trouble is, we use all weather tyres, which means they are a compromise...
If we get regular cold winters, then i'm sure this country will have to adopt a driving law that
says we have to change to winter tyres during certain months of the year (like Norway, Sweden as examples),
the tyres have a different construction and are made from a different compound...
and some even have studs (plastic, so they do not damage the tarmac).

I know what you mean Dem,
It is nice to have a choice, rather than to be told that you have to have xyz
on your car between, say oct - feb...

Think you might find that leaving the ACE is always a bit bad
Becouse the Boy Racers Bleech up the road so they can Drift down the road outside

It s like driving over Derv / it takes a few mile o scrub it off
I myself have left the Ace sideways befor ( without trying )

I think you may be onto something there... I was back at Ace for an early breakfast on Tuesday in my van and it was particularly slippery again locally.

I wouldn't mind running a second set of wheels fo winter tyres it is just the expense as Maser wheels are a bit speciallist to take the loadings necessary... If anyone changes their wheels let us know if the old ones are made available please...

FYI From this article on BBC news http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11969958

Once the temperature falls below seven degrees Celsius, standard tyres tend to harden up, reducing their grip.

But winter tyres contain a higher proportion of natural rubber and silica, which keeps them more pliable in cold weather.

In tests conducted by the British Tyre Manufacturers Association, a car braking at 60mph in wet conditions has a five metre shorter braking distance if it has winter tyres fitted.

Cheers

5 meters is a big difference...

My observation of driving habits where people have winter tyres (Norway and Sweden),
is that they tend to adapt to the conditions and the fact they have reasonable grip...
what I mean is that they tend to go just as fast on snowy/icy roads with the appropriate tyres,
whereas in this country we tend to slow down a bit when we don't have any grip...:D

Why do you need a second set of rims? The handbook lists winter tyres for the standard 18" wheels on the 4200.
