Beating around bushes is ok at times...not at others........I can only truly comment on my own experiences ....generalising and railing against all and sundry really doesn't nail things down.

I've had very helpful experiences with my local council...and some not so. I refuse to condemn all PS groups or their workers as being little short of useless.

I have the utmost respect for the people that keep our hospitals running ... They are hero's and deserve more........SO even though I have said some bits I to think some groups deserve more ....or what they have been promised..

Each sector has its heroes and villains ...................each its most dedicated to their job and career.......some good...some bad........some brilliant.....some mind bogglingly awful, such is the variety of life.

Not a question of a promise Andy....but a contract of employment with terms and conditions attached.

I think you will find that every contract of employment states that the terms can be changed with a minimum notice period, that includes everything, pay, holidays and pension, public and private..... It's just that most people don't read them when they are offered a job. I am afraid that the argument of 'thats not what I signed up for' does not wash.

Contract of employement....Thing is this can be changed........These are not what they used to be and anything can change as long as enough notice is given....

For 2 million PS sector it does work...........it aint the private sector...........where it can be dog eat dog.......we expect the government to have higher standards.......they had already changed it 3 years ago after a comprehensive review.......now all they want is to make us pay more tax....simples.........................we have all baled out the banks.....why are the PS being asked to pay for it twice?

Hospital workers, firemen, teachers are the core of the country.....
They deserve to get paid high....

A nurse earns 20k a year i hear, disgusting....

A teacher is on 22k with a top max of 30k.....

These people keep the country going and need motivating....

Loz, sorry this is going to wind you up even more.

In law you can discriminate if for the sake of authenticity you need to take on staff from one ethnic group, so for instance your Chinese can take on only staff who are chinese and say no to someone who is white/black/asia 'no your the wrong creed'. That way it retains its Chinese Reastaurant feel.

I agree with you Dem. same world over. I think we are **** lucky that teachers and nurses have a higher calling than money. Not sure what can be more important than our health and nurturing the learning of future generations.

In scandinavia teaching is seen like being a doctor.....

Agree that, that used to be the case when i was a lad , having brought up two kids through the educational system in the last 15 years i would wholly disagree that this is the case now , both my kids went to a pretty much above average schools, parents evenings were a farce , dress code by the teachers a total disgrace, all the pupils call and introduce their teachers by first their names, i fail to see that carry on is supposed to install and command respect amongst the pupils and parents long term, schools should and are suppposed to be a place of COMPULSORY learning for at least 11 years, i dont have a problem in creating an enviroment for easier learning providing standards are maintained and possibly increased , the vast amounts spent on education in recents years should have seen standards shoot through the roof , alas completely the opposite , its all to layed back and liberal everyones a winner and definately no losers ( whats that all about on sports day ) nothing to prepare them for real life ,

Dem if you want your lilun to do well at school , please take an active role right the way through 4-16 atleast , just use the school as a back up to supplement what you teach them , you cant rely on schools anymore, believe me you will see where im coming from , it was a total shock to me and the schooling i had

And yes i do blame the teachers aswell as the system , overworked with agenda's and league tables they may be , but they could fight against the system if they wanted to, strike if necessary but they dont , only happy to strike for more pay less hours and bigger and gilt edged pensions

Im not saying their necessarily thick , just standards are really low , incentives for them to improve and command respect have been withdrawn because of the EU or the liberalists , I dont advocate them dishing out capital punishment willy nilly (caning) etc but it never did me any harm , but some serious punishment is required with some pupils to maintain classroom integrity , and their not allowed to administer it , things really need to change , i think personally they ought to re-look at how teaching was practiced 50 years ago ,start from scratch again ommiting all the mistakes that were made over the years , i always was amazed why they started playing around with education in the late 70's , we had a system that wasn't broke , an envy of the world , record numbers of foreign students compared to other countries , ever since its gone from bad to worse , Schools in the sixties were not in the best state of repair , but they were well equipped with engineering workshops/ wood working shops and the arts , science labs were adequate ,

Recent years have seen billions spent on super designed structures, full of the latest state of the art computer tech etc etc and standards are actually lower, altho the gov would have you believe pass rates are higher , as well they might be but standards are lower , less than a year ago they conducted a series of exams by 20 x 5th form students , they took the curren maths and english Gcse equiverlant of today and then took the equiverlant to a 1970 o'levels ...............................................14 passed the current exams just 2 passed the O'level of the 1970 and they reckon the A'level standards of today are even easier .......................just to improve pass rates....................... Asian school exam results even with their lack of facilities compared to ours are far superior .............plain and simple our standards have dropped

so has my typing

Loz.....lots have things have changed over the decades/years, some have been good...a lot positively destructive.

As in life, work, relationships, activities you only ever get something out.....if you put something in...too many people want something for nothing or no effort now....and it doesn't work that way.

The only time Mrs P was off work in 30 odd years was with a broken thumb when she'd been overloaded at work and closed her thumb in the car door......plus 1 flu........thats it.....no other days off....in 30 years.

As for myself, had a the flu, bizarrely at the same time as Mrs P in 1985...we spent 4 days in bed......Yoko and John spring to mind...our GP had a right laff!!! And no more than a fortnight off been a few back twinges and sore throats.

Having said that I have colleagues who are off monthly with one thing and another!

Thats life guys!

I agree with Loz, I think that we should be given the choice to opt out of the system, I.e. private health care and private school and get a reduction in National Insurance contributions. I already pay for both.....

I could rant for ages about teaching standards slipping. I won't, but it's unbelievable how people who I wouldn't employ to babysit get a teaching degree. They shouldn't be allowed on the course, yet they pass as it's seen as a problem if they fail, therefore teacher training standards drop; inevitably education standards follow suit.

Must be impartial on this one. Ahem. I remember helping my Son, who is now eighteen, with his homework about 4 years ago. His history project just happened to be the second world war. Having watched Das Boot etc. more times than I care to remember, I wont deny relishing the chance to get involved. I was therefore surprised to read one piece of A4 paper on the second world war. September 1939 at the top, and February1945 at the bottom! What was interesting, was that Rommel survived the war, and went on to a career in post war Germany. Naturally I went to discuss this with my Sons History teacher. I will spare the hour long lecture I gave her, however, her summary was this: "does it really matter about Rommel". I replied no, in the grand scheme of life, probably not, however, my Son will now not believe another word you tell him, does that not bother you? Then the bell went, and she had to leave.
