Chris Evans steps out in astonishing Maserati MC12

Having revealed some of his astonishing car collection to the world on last Sunday's Top Gear (even letting James May drive his Ferrari 250 GT California), Chris Evans must have decided that he needed to surpass himself...

...so he went to the shops in the conspicuous Italian hypercar you see above. He's difficult to make out behind the dark windscreen, but that's definitely Chris Evans driving his (presumably recently purchased) Maserati MC12 up there.

Pictured in London today, Evans is one of only 50 people in the world that can possibly have an MC12; in 2004 Maserati made 30 of them, then the same number again in 2005, with 50 of the total run available to buy.

We're not sure what he paid for his, but every one of the original cars was sold before being made, each for €600,000. Today that's £500,000 - and we're guessing Chris paid more.

One of the reasons it's so rare is that it's built on the chassis of the extraordinary Ferrari Enzo, only 400 of which were produced.

It has a removable targa top, although with nowhere to store the roof once it's removed, the MC12 is hardly the classic boulevard cruiser. It's wider than an American hospital bed, has no rear screen and no boot. In fact, it's a pretty thoroughbred race car.

Built as a homologation model so that Maserati could race, the MC12's Ferrari-sourced 6.0-litre V12 engine has 620bhp, giving it a 3.8-second 0-62mph time and a top speed of 205mph.

It's rear-mid engined, and power is fed to the rear wheels through a flappy paddle gearbox; this is not an easy car to drive.

But it is a fairly phenomenal way of getting a pint of milk. And for that we salute you, Mr Evans.

I saw that TG episode. A lovely car. Chris clearly said to James don't drive it in standing water. The day was wet from the start ! He drove through every puddle on the road. I admire his easy going attitude to the cars wanting them to be driven and not hidden away. TG must pay out huge sums in Insurance cover for road tests. I was in C.E's pub not so long ago in Sussex
( I forget the name ) Not far from Lurgashall Village. If you're ever in the area check out Lurgashall's Winery. Home made Mead.
The Silver Birch and Walnut Mead are yum. www.lurgashall.co.uk/

If I were a cop, I'd book him. Blatantly disregarding the requirement for his front number plate to be visible at all times! (-:

What a gorgeous looking motor, would have one any day over the Enzo.

must admit ,its honestly one of those cars where there is no where suitable for a front plate , apart from sticky numbers on the paintwork (which is a no no ) the body is too steep and angle unless there in a police helicopter

I could make a similar argument for my GTS, have already knocked the number plate off twice - luckily Maserati mount the holder on rubber fixtures so it's easy enough to pop back on. But nevertheless, it's still illegal surely?

Sounds like it might fall under the same category as the E-type Jag with it's stuck on numberplate. That's not technically legal either, but people seem to get away with it because its so pretty. Or was that just another urban legend? Does anyone actually know? (I'm all googled out today or I'd find out for myself!).

Its £35 and no points for each offence, I think he can afford it.

Not if he is given a rectification order and then pulled again. Car wouldn't have got type approval if there wasn't an official place for the plate. Where that might be... I have NO idea!

I have a sticky plate on the Marcos, not legal but does the job and everyone is happy so far.

Aren't there certain cars that are exempt from requiring a front plate? Thought the Veyron was another? Thought it was dictated by such limited numbers that the owners were easily traceable with or without a plate?

I was thinking the same thing Miles, anyway you're only going to see it from the rear and that definitely has a plate.
