Check Engine Light

Hello all.

I took my GT out this evening for the first time in a few days and within 1/2 mile the CEL came on with a repetitive beeping and the Check Engine message on the dash.
I turned the car around and by the time I went from reverse back into drive the message had gone and the CEL disappeared.

Is this the kind of thing we could describe as part of the character of Maserati or the foreshadowing of something more sinister. It's been very wet and damp around these parts and I haven't been out in my car for a long run for a while, so I'm hoping its just a glitch.

Any advice gratefully received, thanks.

As above. Winter shows any weakness in the battery especially in low use cars that are not frequently 'conditioned'

I’ve had this issue on my 3200. You may think you’ve got rid of it (as I did) and then it comes back. These things can be intermittent. If the battery charge doesn’t fix it you need to get it on some diagnostics. As it’s a GT I would’ve thought a basic OBD2 reader would be a good starting point …

First thing I would do is make sure the battery is fully charged, a weak battery is the cause of all sort of mischief!
Thanks for the reply, it's on charge now. Annoyingly tomorrow is when I need the car!

Mine is kept on a CTEK charger when it is being used as well as when it is on SORN.

I had a CEL situation. Did a battery reset. Light went off. All fine for a couple of weeks. Happened again. Battery reset. Solved.

Then after a month, CEL again. This time, the battery reset did not resolve it.

Autoshield diagnosed faulty MAF sensor.
Replaced it. All is well.

There is usually a reason why CEL is triggered. In my case, MAF sensor started to play up. Ultimately it needed a new MAF sensor. A battery reset might resolve a glitch. But it often points to something is wrong or on its way out. So it's worth having it checked out.

Water in a lambda sensor. GT’s don’t throw out EML’s very often but if it was really wet it can happen particularly on a car not used much. If it doesn’t happen again don’t worry about it at all.

The big issue with clearing the light with a battery reset is that without scanning it you don't know the next light is caused by the same thing....

I always read my codes. I may not *understand* them, but at least I know if it's a one off or not :)

Hi CatmanV2, I am looking for a (hopefully affordable) scanner that works well with a QPV, what scanner do you use and would you recommend it?

I have an AP200 as originally suggested by @conaero. It's £70 on Amazon at the moment. It covers everything in my Ghibli and I suspect it'll do much the same on the QPV:

Autel or Mac are the best in my experience but not cheap.

Wouldn't argue. Of course the AP200 is probably not a good idea to try and re-calibrate gearboxes and PIS, but for reading and clearing it seems pretty full functioned to me.
Even adding keys ;)

I mean let's be clear. It lives in the door pocket. If I get any kind of odd warning it's the work of 2 minutes to plug it in, read the code and get an idea.

The engine light came on again this morning. Gah!

When I started it there was a whiff of at the engine running a bit rich so I suspect it's going to be an oxygen sensor -at least that's what I'm telling myself. It'll be off to my local Maserati garage on the back of a RAC trailer as soon as they can come and get it so hopefully we'll know more soon.

I'll be sure to keep you all posted with the next exciting development!

Hopefully nothing serious (which is, of course, the other benefit of being able to scan it....)

The RAC have sent someone out to check the faults, they won't put it on a trailer until someone comes to check it, which seems a massive waste of resources, but that's their policy, anyway a nice chap arrived, plugged in his scanner thing and there's misfires on cylinders 5, 6 and 8.
That doesn't sound too good does it.
