My better half stole the Kia from me last week to commute to her new job, leaving me high and dry as my GranSport is in the garage for a couple of weeks for a major service, lowering, and detailing. Getting the train to Newbury from Portishead took me 4 hours each way last week ... uugh ... so today I went to Bath to add another Korean chariot to the fleet: this time a Kia Rio EcoDynamics.

It's not very sexy (did I even need to write that?) but ... road tax for the year is zero, it's congestion charge immune, and there is a claimed 88 mpg on the combined cycle.

If I alternate between this scummy oil-burner and the Maser every day for work, then I reckon I can get 55 mpg for my weekly petrol spend. Woohoo! :)

Pat i think this was the car that was tested by fifth gear , the claims are widly exagerated ,wholly underpowered they only managed to get around 46 on town driving and early 50's on a run and that was them all driving conservatively except Tiff , who managed to get around 38, still a reasonable commuter if you like crosswords to reduce the boredom

My son has a new Golf 1.6 TDi with the 7 speed sequential box. Recently I was driving over to Wythenshawe which is 41 miles of mixed, but mainly motorway, motoring. The first day I got 68.2 mpg. The second day I got 75.6 going in and 76.8 coming back. The third day I got 79.3 going in and a truly staggering 84.5 coming home. The range remaining was 675 miles which when added to the 333.7 miles done gave a tank range of 1008.7. Overall its getting well over 60mpg average which includes a fair bit of town driving. It's also a very nice to drive in Match spec.

Claimed milage is never close to real world because the tests are not remotely representative. All they provide is a comparison against other cars which have been tested in exactly the same way. Our family Verso 2.2TDi claims around 42mpg and has never got close. Normal driving will give around 30. The thing probably has about the same drag coefficient as a cliff so is even worse on a steady-paced motorway run. Still, it has seven seats, keeps the miles off the Maser and can bump up kerbs without needing the wheels to be fixed afterwards. And I don't get anal about mud smeered up the seats, doors and roof-lining. A sensible car and a stupid car is a good combo. Good luck with the oil-burner and rejoice in fewer fuel stops.

Look at the Fiat 500 Twin Air fuel consumption claims. Then look online at what owners actually get to the gallon, and its a huge difference! Many owners were/are convinced, their cars are faulty!

It does when he drives it! He does give it some when the mood takes him but he is generally sensible. I did it to see if I could get close to the 73 mpg that is booked for it and I did. We are taking it to France for 10 days in August so we will see what it does when loaded with 3 and our luggage

We're four up plus luggage in the GTS to France in August. I reckon you'll be making fewer fuel stops!

I'm planning on getting a 500 Twin-Air for running around town. No road tax, no congestion charge. Also, no refilling the tank after two hundred miles or so. However, when I took one out on a test drive last week, the salesman made a point of telling me that my driving style could "seriously affect" the car's fuel consumption.

How was the Twin-Air to drive? I read a description of them as "perky"; after seeing the rate one of them disappeared off at some the traffic lights last week it's a pretty good description. Sounded good, too.

Just driven it in town + on the motorway to get home, probably about 50/50, the dash is showing 66 mpg. Loz and the others are right, I don't think I'll be seeing the claimed figures, but this will be a motorway tool so maybe I'll get higher tomorrow when I do the regular Newbury run.

Not as nice of course as doing the run in the Maser, but the profit made from the petrol claimed back after a couple of runs will pay for a full tank of fuel in the Maser - so not all bad.

"Perky" describes the ride well. It was much more responsive than I'd imagined. There was a rorty snort going on when I pushed it a little. I really liked it.
