Good afternoon team, anyone have a reference for changing out a defective engine temperature sensor. Mine fails intermittently, causing serious performance problems when belting along the freely.

For 4200 tipos: Off side front wheel off, wheel arch liner off and it's located in the bottom right area of your view. You need a deep socket to get if out (cannot remember the size sorry)

Never changed it but it’s here:

Intermittent issue makes me think wiring rather than the sensor itself.

If you havent already purchased the sensor then it is same as Lancia and Fiat Bravo 2.0 16v - Magnetti Marelli 402 183 01. Mine was changed when belt was changed on 3 year service so not sure how to do with belts and covers in situ as it sits quite deep. New sensor cured the intermittent fault I had on start up (temp gauge very erratic) which meant very difficult to start as symptoms of flooding that used to clear after about a mile once warm. I am convinced however I have a broken wire or connector as changing a hose has resulted in constant CEL light now. Let me know if you come across a broken wire or connector to help me identify potential location

Good morning all,
Many thanks for your support. I have found the sensor (I was using the Euro Spares exploded diagram to try and find it but it is a tad confusing). Thanks Oneball!

SteveM, I am on it and have an auto electrician with me: we have been working on the Throttle Body/ Pedal Sensor which not only causes a CEL, it goes straight to 'Limp Mode'. So when I change out the sensor I will do some sleuthing on the wiring loom just to ensure the bulkhead connector and under bonnet wiring is in good shape, after that it is internal to the car, and I can report that even with the heat of Australia the wiring within the cabin is in pristine condition. Thanks for the alternative part numbers, they are not the ones I was given, and they turned out to be wrong. I ordered an EPS 1.830.286 Temperature Sensor, unfortunately it had a four pin connector, the wiring for my sensor has 3 pins, as does the original temp sensor. I will record your numbers for future ordering.

Whilst I am on the topic of TB/Pedal sensor, I had my TB modified to a Hall Effect contactless unit some years ago, but now the magnets in the TB are starting to disintegrate, and the butterfly valve in the TB does not move freely on its springs. This has caused all the problems associated with TB inaccuracy we know and love. After much trawling the Facebook sites etc, I highly recommend a visist to Dave Shanks website Maserati3200.net where he offers rebuilt TB and a contactles Pedal sensor and some really helpfull tests and set up procedures for the 3200, he is also very approachable, and friendly/helpful.

Kind regards,
Chris

Yes, Davy has been a member here for 12 years, a some of the content on his site is either from here (alternative parts) or what he has shared here, and is always helpful. I'm pleased to say my car is in one of the pics on his site, for the Forum trip to Modena for the Centenary.

Good afternoon Steve,
Could you send a retailer for the temperature sensor, I have spent some time on the Magneti Marelli parts catalogue site using Fiat and Lancia without success. I have to import it from the UK anyway, so a local UK retailer would be great. Of course Euro Spares don't have one!
Regards our intermittent Temp Sensor readings, I have been thinking about it with comparison to the Oil Pressure sensor which is also a problem of working intermittently, although with much less drastic effects than the Temp Sensor. I rember Loz (this forum) had a fix for the oil sensor which involved taking it apart, and repairing the bi-metallic strip inside to make it more reliable. The similarity is that a sensor can, and will work intermittently, and it may not be a wiring problem earthing/shorting. Notwithtsanding, I will have a good look to see if there are any rub points visisble in the engine bay, for both our edification. Many thanks, Chris.

Steve,
I found one on ebay. After a long trail through various retailers, Partshive gave me a conversion chart for Magneti Marelli (MM)to alternative suppliers various, it is quite a commonly used sensor, as you pointed out, Fiat, Alfa, Lancia etc. all use it in various engines. I ordered an EPS alternative 1.830.277 which comes up on the conversion chart as the substitute for MM 402 183 01. I found Partshive very helpful, and very free with their information. The tools they provided for alternatives are:
https://catalogo.facet.eu/EN# and http://autoagencies.co.nz/crossover Marelli 241016.pdf

Many thanks for everyone's help. SITREP to follow, after test drive.
Cheers, Chris
