Any ideas on why the cats break down and any mileage guide as to when this happens??

Mostly down to a hard knock on the exhaust going over humps etc.........its a very fragile type and the exhaust is too low down........just like the air intake!!!!!!!!

Well Miles.....when one went on my car as per the previous owners invoices, they did check no damage had occured to the engine as part of the repairs

P

And so they should P. The car is exhausting to different pressure from each bank. It'd screw the engine management readings and I can see that this could cause problems, but not debris going backwards up the exhaust pipe.

Thanks for all the input chaps. No luck sourcing a second hand part yet but I've had a couple of offers for the RHS one if I go for the Larinis!

@ Miles, Conaero, Loz, Parisian
Interestingly enough a couple of the breakers I've spoken to today (thanks again Mr P) have said they throw away more than half the cats as they are damaged/breaking down/gone completely. This along with number that the Indy I use has replaced, suggests its pretty common. Since it's so common and the number of damaged engines is relatively low, this would suggest the risk is low. As to if its a risk worth taking, I guess I'll find out how brave I am tomorrow morning! I looked into replacing the primary cat and I asked the garage that did some exhaust work on my Alfa but they couldn't source a cat (size/shape) to replace the primary and didn't fancy the job. But if I can't gather the necessary funds for the replacement Larini's I'll look into asking/begging David at Larini to do the replacement.

I've had Supersprint stuff in the past and been happy (mostly) with it. Unfortunately it looks like doing both sides would be more expensive than the Larini option. I'll see if they have any in stock and if they will do a deal on both sides together.

Just to round this off. I ended up going for the Larini's. The good news is that they have improved the sound and she is now running smoothly. The bad news is that it seems the rattle noise was not the breaking up cat and the noise is still there. The worse news is that it seems to have "cleaned" up and amplified the sound! From the symptoms my garage thinks it could be the exhaust manifold, A search on here throws up:

Which sounds about right. So hopefully I'll get that sorted and all will be well!

This also means I've got a RHS catalyst section in good condition for sale if anyone is still interested.

Cheers,
Kenny
