Cars that are faster than you thought

For starters, the BMW 535D.

Out in the GT-S the other day, driving down some nice straight country roads with a 535D on my back bumper. I thought I'd show him a clean pair of heels and only managed to put maybe 20 car lengths between us before having to brake for a corner, through the corner he was back on my bumper, along the next straight same again, max 20 car lengths. I gave up after that.

Very impressed, I'd like to think that it was chipped and tuned to the 9's but it probably wasn't. I was thinking of replacing my 530 touring with an M5 touring at some point, but will now be checking out a 535D touring first!

Any more to be wary of in the faster than you thought category?

I find a lot of modern cars are capable of keeping up with the Maz down country lanes, particularly twisty ones, which is why I don't bother trying to keep up or show the performance off on these types of road. On the motorway its a different matter.....

my friend had a 535d, i drove it!!
fast, safe, and that was before he got DMS to go over it, i told him at the time, it must be the fastest and underrated car on the road for the money....when those turbos kick in it will keep up with anything....also worth looking into is the 530d and get a dms onto that....

Nissan Sunny GTi. Once had a tete a tete with one in my 996 C4. I had to do 160mph to get rid of him! All on the autobahn of course!

Cadillac CTS-V. Wish they did them in RHD. Looks like some rubbish Japanese four door saloon but will get you from 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds.

Amazing, those 535d BMWs!

Here's some facts for you Dan that will put what happened into perspective (and perhaps make you weep!)

Your car has 490Nm torque which peaks at 4,750rpm and weighs 1880kg
The BMW has 560Nm torque at 1750rpm and weighs 1660kg

So, it's got 14% more torque and is 12% lighter than the GTS. Although the Maserati has plenty more power, I'd imagine it's the torque that mattered at the time!

Dan, I got my E90 330D chipped and on the rollers got 275bhp and 452 lbs/ft. The guy who organised the session had a 335D with the same chip as mine and got 339bhp and 512lbs/ft and still got mid 40s on a run. In the real world it is probably faster cross country than an M5.

That is all very interesting, thanks.
Louise was moaning about the mpg of the 530 petrol, one of these could keep her quiet and entertain me.... Hmmm.
