Yep, engine is better while it stays together, they weren’t that good in period but modern cranks etc give them an advantage.

That's what he says along with cooling improvements.

Its strange how classic homologation seems to work another friend races a Alfa 105 which is tuned to period homologation but he can't get close to the power that the Escort and BMW boys can get out of their homologated engines which is a total turn round to the day when the Alfa was by far the more tuneable unit.

Its the extra years of development that have gone into the BDA and 4 pot BMW. Alfa had moved on by the 80s. They’ll still meet the period homolagation but there’s a lot that doesn’t cover. Valves may be a fixed size but cylinder head flow can be altered for example, as can cam durations etc.

He still does OK, seems to get class wins regularly
