Carbon Fibre Seat Backs

Howdy,

My car has the dreaded sticky seat backs, so I've organised to have them replaced with genuine carbon fibre parts rather than getting them painted or wrapped. The parts will be $1600 a pair + shipping, and if you want an idea of quality I'm using the same supplier as https://www.carbonmiata.com/

I can pull the price down a bit if I get a couple of orders. Please let me know if you're interested!

How would you know the carbon fibre seat back would fit if they are not OEM.

Also, I think you probably need to account for duty when the shipment gets into UK.

I think like most I would want to see the finished article fitted to a GS before parting with £2k

I'm having the parts made - they'll be moulded off my existing parts. I'll be sending those off to the manufacturer. They'll be 1:1 copies.

Unfortunately duties on the receivers end are their responsibility.

Completely fair. I really just wanted to gauge interest and if someone is serious maybe organise a deposit to try and lower the price overall. If no one wants to join the party I'll order my own and anyone can pick up a set at a later date.

Also - if someone is seriously interested and just wants to see the results first, I'm happy for them to PM me and I'll follow up with them directly once the parts are ready.

Is there a reason why you are using a supplier from the US, surely a U.K. firm could do this avoiding the need for duty and a lot easier to deal with any faults / minor tweaks.

Look forward to seeing the final results.

The OP is in Australia so a US route is probably a bit easier.

The enzo/stradale/victory carbon buckets are made by Sparco. I remember on their website some very similar, real carbon recliners. I seem to remember a price similar to what you are quoting above. Check out that route.

The supplier is in China, but carbon miata is a US company. I just wanted to give people and idea of what the end result would be.

I tried to get an Australian supplier while the AUD is weaker than light beer, but in typical Australian fashion I couldn't find anyone who wanted to do any work...

so in AUD terms looking at 1600 USD which is currently the better part of $2400....plus shipping with insurance I would presume would come to several hundred given the volume (as opposed to weight)...so maybe $3000...then $300 on top for GST?

So looking at $3300 plus installation costs?

Shipping would be closer to $300, so in AUD I would hope to keep it under $3k. Man I miss those parity dollar days...

I've got one person who is a hard yes on the other forum. If you're interested enough to put in a deposit to get a third set I know that the supplier will knock off a bit. At this point I'll just be getting one for myself and then putting up photos and I can order more on demand.

have you considered the alternative, of scrubbing yours down and then fixing carbon look wrap to them?

whilst likely to be an inferior product compared to the carbon seats (although this is debatable as the several things I've had made out of China have not worked out so joyously), it is likely to be much cheaper, much faster and less risky.

When I get 'a round tuit' I'll likely just go the carbon wrap option.

It is definitely cheaper and faster, but I'm not concerned about the quality of the results being a risk. The manufacturer has an excellent reputation in the MX-5 community and I've dealt with them before.

Wraps have come a long way over the last few years, but I still find the textured wraps look like vinyl wraps.
