Blinking Gear Selector Display

Hi folks. Running a '99 3200GTA which reminds me of the most neurotic girlfriend I ever had - gorgeous on the outside but with a myriad issues and hang-ups. The latest one that's manifested itself is a blinking gear selector display which clearly needs some sort of attention.

Any idea what this may be? Is there anything visible I should check? Is there a reset procedure I can carry out to see if it clears?

As usual, thanks in advance for any advice.

When you say blinking, is it the display or back lighting flashing on and off or are the numbers changing?

yes please explain what its actually doing?
worth noting that there is a switch which detects the position of the gear lever outside on the side of the gearbox and it gets degraded by the weather, and may need replaced?

Mine did this once, the digits blinking, that was after a service with a specialist that reset several things, stopped doing it before I got home and not done it since.

Thanks for that. I'm too old to worry about asking daft questions, so could someone let me know what a "battery reset" actually entails. Is it as basic as the hard reset of the my old 159's Bluetooth system where I'd just disconnect the battery for 15 minutes whenever the car decided to forget my phone ever existed and refuse to re-pair it?
I went down the route of skipping a battery reset, and taking the car to a specialist for the self-learn procedure... which involves hooking up the car to a Maserati diagnostic unit and running the utility that enables the gearbox to re-learn the min/max tolerances of each gear. If the gear indicator is flashing, my understanding is that these tolerances need to be re-established and therefore a battery reset isn't going to permanently make the issue go away... the specialist I took it to performed the self-learn FOC, it didn't take more than 10 minutes.

Smashing, cheers. She's going in to Vic @ Migliore for a couple of things in the New Year so I'll add that to the list.
