Gear indicator flashing on and off

Morning all, just took the GS out for a drive and the the gear indicator is flashing on and off, whether in sport or comfort. It has never done this before the gear indicator has always been solid on. Is this an indication of something happening.
Thanks in anticipation

Missed shift alert (from memory). 'Probably' nothing to worry about. Should clear after a restart. If it comes back then you might have a more serious problem

Just did 100 miles run around the white peak Sheffield, Glossop, Buxton and it never showed up once after reset so hopefully it isn't anything serious.

The gear display flashing means that there is a gear engagement or disengagement problem. The first port of call should be to perform a self-learn of the gear positions. Nine times out of ten this resolves the problem.

Cheers, Voicey. As ever, a better response than the rest of us :)

Is there any additional risk in not doing a self learn?

The display is flashing for a reason - in my mind it would be good to know if that reason was to do with the selection and engagement parameters or if something else was amiss. The same applies to the CEL. Most advice is to see if it will be cured with a battery rest but surely some people must be curious why it presented itself in the first place?

Seems fair. I think the challenge is having to 'drop everything' to head to someone with an SD, and fork out £n which won't really change anything? If it's break*ing* will knowing any sooner help? If there's nothing wrong your out of time and money.

I know mine did it, but very infrequently and no know challenges when you scanned it....

If it's going to make a potential fault worse, surely I'd want to know though :)

You're too far away from me but for anyone else with this problem that is more local I will do a self learn for free if you bring the car to my workshop.

Just had this issue arise on my GS today... if I'm reading the above correctly the suggestion is a battery reset than a spirited drive to help the car re-learn the gear positions.

Is there anything unique to the GS I should be aware of beyond the usual disconnect/reconnect procedure below?

  1. Connect the battery and then go and do something else for 20 mins. This allows the heater mix valve to calibrate.
  2. Switch the ignition on (engine off) and wait for the throttle body to calibrate (you can hear it clicking) and for the heater flaps to stop moving (depends on the model). 1-2 mins is enough for this step.
  3. Start the engine and let it idle for a while - this starts the fuel trim adaption and variator learning.
  4. Whilst the engine is running the bits like windows, radio code, clock, seats, etc can be sorted. I would also check the EPB if fitted.
  5. Switch engine off and lock/unlock to make sure all is working well and that the door handles are working (later cars).

By flashing are you talking about a constant and regular flash, or intermittent?
Constant and regular flashing of the gear indicator, irrespective of gear selected or normal vs. sport nor manual vs. automatic. Only started this afternoon when I glanced at the dash… no other symptoms.

Have you checked for leaks or low level? My pipes split this year due to age (2006 car)
