As others have said above. Ignore, delete and change passwords. You should be changing passwords reasonably regularly. Often this hacked data gets bounded around for years and is worthless in most cases but they only need 1% to be useful to make it worthwhile.

It is a fact of electronic life now and to be expected but not personal. No point wasting any time reporting it or tracing it or losing any sleep.

This is visible and what you can see. Most don't know, some do.....but the worst compromises are from all the big boys you trust. They have all your data and boy do they use it whether you have agreed to it or not.

It is a small concern bit I have nothing to hide. If I were a Tory MP with a weird fettish or such like I might be more worried

So I got one of these today (but already in my spam folder). They quoted a password that I commonly use for low-security applications, and looking through my records it might have been hacked from any of these:
  • Charles Tyrwhitt
  • Companies House
  • exec-appointments.com
  • Friends Reunited
  • eBooks.com
  • Wayfaring
  • The Times
  • eXpansis
  • Monster.co.uk
Maybe @Phil the Brit recognises some overlaps.
The first two are the only ones I have used in the past 10 years so I will change the password there.

Also, the website that @CatmanV2 suggested claimed that my email had been compromised in breeches at:
  • Adobe
  • Dropbox
  • Kickstarter
  • LinkedIn
  • Zynga
All over 5 years ago.

Also, just realised both scammers are using Microsoft Outlook.com
Coincidence?

During a period of time when I am bored, I wish I had the skillset to get one over on the scammers!

i literally have a box file full of passwords to remind myself of the password for each site I've registered with, i just cant understand why someone would only have one or 2 passwords for everything, i'm sure there are more technical ways but it works for me

....

Someone probably wrote a script to rapidly generate throwaway outlook.com accounts. Microsoft will plug it in the next couple of days and then the emails will start coming from gmail.com

Reply with knob pictures.

No point replying.
Firstly, you are telling the scammers that they got a 'live' email address they can sell. Secondly they may like knob pictures. Thirdly there really no satisfaction to be in corresponding with semi-literate scammers. And the account is probably dead by now.

I’m not sure “semi” is appropriate in these circumstances.

Last night a friend of mine was telling about some virtual dates he's had recently. There was one chap with whom he'd made contact who indeed is a Tory politician being evasive in early conversation with a potential date. Seeing as this friend gets only 45% of his income from self-employment, he can't get the government help so maybe I suggest other ways for him to make up the shortfall from government? :D

Sounds like he’s now in line for a possible govt handjob. Oops I meant handout.

If it makes them happy, then it's probably worthwhile but the odds of getting your camera under the control of a bad actor without a full on compromise of your system (which would be prevented by the normal 'hygenic' practices of good PC security) is very very low. In short, if they have control of your computer camera, they have control of your computer. IME they'd be far more likely to be interested in your online bank details than watching you pick your nose.
Don't conflate hacking a PC with a camera attached with accessing a stand alone IP / Webcam which is rather a lot simpler because people don't follow pretty simple steps like changing default passwords and leaving them accessible on the net...

Thats me well and truly fooked then ,
i cant remember the passwords ive had for the last 10 years , I was that runner in the trenches that was sent with the all important message "Send reinforcements we are going to advance" that came out 500m later to (send three and fourpence were going to dance ) ;)

I tell my wife and kids also some that can't do anything fancy there is nothing wrong with a black book in a drawer with password written down. It is pretty secure in a sense as completely offline and single point.

exactly, it's not just a password, it's life changing in some cases if compromised with regards to fraud/banking etc, the few important passwords such as banking I can simply recall from memory, all the rest I simply refer to my file, I don't trust all this techy stuff on computers, think the yoof of today put too much credence in to it and having only one or two passwords throughout, crazy

There's so much wrong with that article it's quite hard to know where to start

C

As a reminder to cover your camera when not in use it serves a pretty good purpose. What would you say are the article's top errors? I'm not disagreeing with you, by the way - this is your bailiwick, not mine.
