Back in the fold

Hi guys,
It’s been a long while since I have been on the forum.
i have been very busy with my Land Rover series and defender addiction, which has been all consuming for the past 18months…
So much so that even my F430 and recently acquired F12 have been getting very little attention.
I have been toying with the idea of getting rid of a couple of land rovers (currently owning 4 of them) and get back to the Maserati fold.
Having already owned a granturismo in the past (pre facelift), I am tempted to get another one - post 2013 facelift this time.
My only concern at this stage is rusted chassis. So many horror stories I have heard of from my Ferrari specialist.
Else than doing a PPI, how do I spot rust on the subframe / chassis?
Any thoughts on how to get those cars protected? (Please don’t mention the horrible stuff I put on my Land Rover eg waxoil/dinitrol/lanogard)

Welcome back, also.

Sports Italia, from the owner of this forum, does a comprehensive very affordable subframe treatment for long term assurance… Hopefully Matt or others who have dealt with this will be along soon to share more.

One of the easiest ways to tell is to do a full steering wheel lock to one side and inspect the metal struts linking between the two upper control arm joints… these usually go early on. Other parts of the subframe are also visible from the wheel arches.

Thanks Mowlas.

yes, the first place they go is the triangle box section that braces the two upper wishbone inboard mounts to the subframe.

These are repairable in situ by removing the upper wishbones.

The treatment (£395 plus vat) consists of:

1. Inspect, descale and clean the underside plus front and rear subframes, chassis plates, headlight supports and wheel arches and suspension

2. wire brush any surface rust

3. apply rust remedy to any required areas

4. apply 2 coats of rubberised stone chip

5. apply clear wax and fill front subframe cavities

Easiest check you can do for free is check the MOT history and see if anything has been picked up first during the Test.
Then if interested it has to be a pre purchase inspection.

Welcome back.
Don't think you'll regret swapping a couple of landies for a GT sport.

Regarding the subframe, well, you already know about it, so your a step ahead.
If your used to dealing with rusty Land rovers then I assume you'll know what a rusty subframe looks like lol.
If you don't want to take the risk of looking yourself, then PPI. But make sure it's someone that knows these cars, not a generic one.

Thanks a lot for the warm welcome back and for the valuable feedback.
I am going to start scanning the market and see what I find…

Out of curiosity, does anybody know this car - private seller. It seems v cheap on the surface for a FSH, mileage and facelift… obviously all depends on that FSH and condition

Beast of a car… almost too quick if I am honest.
a little pic taken during the national Ferrari day earlier this year.

Welcome back and good luck with the search

And a beautiful F12 you have there - Is it, Grigio Titanio? A great choice

On the face of it, it looks good value.

Not a fan of the wheels tho……and its a bit too black…….on black…..on black.
Other than that, :thumb3: .

Never used to be a fan of Astro's but if they are Grigio or Black they're quite nice.

The murdered look isn't for everyone.

The 550 didn’t last long! Not a fan? Or is it just that the F12 is hugely more modern and way quicker?

The 550 lasted almost 3 years, but the F12 w the perfect specs - an almost exact but modern version of the 550 specs wise - came up at a main dealer and my man math did the rest.
i couldn’t justify to the wife why keeping 3 Ferrari (and 2 front engine V12) in the stable made sense financially or space wise.
Hope I won’t be regretting this, as I had put a lot of ££ in the 550 to put it right
