Auto Ice Mode - GranTurismo

Hi,

Am a new owner and have had my 2011 GranTurismo 3 weeks now. I have read about all the niggles but they all fade away when you drive this car.

Anyway - I am digressing.

I've been driving in Auto ICE mode since the weather has changed and I wanted to know if this effects fuel consumption?

The reason I ask, is that my wife recently drove it and I put it into Ice mode so it was not so aggressive on roundabouts and seems a lot more tamer in this mode. I think this would be the best mode for her as she will rarely drive it..

Please let me know your thoughts.
Regards

Hi Nasman,

Ice Mode sets the car to change gear a bit earlier, so as not to allow too much aggression on the loud pedal, in theory it should I suppose be more frugal on the juice as the engine is not working as hard as it can. Put a new label on saying "LADY" over the Ice marking....GOOD IDEA..!!!

Cheers

Hey R,

Yes - I thought it may actually be more frugal as it definitely revs lower, but I thought that missing out the first gear probably drinks more juice in start stop traffic that is London.

Hehe.. Yeah - Like the idea of a Lady mode sticker.. Or Hangover sticker..

The V8's are a big engine and should cope with that, just no hard acceleration from standstill in 2nd as that could work really ******* the clutch.

Ice mode

Harry Metcalfe of drive mag did an article a while back about how he increased his MPG by driving in ICE setting for about 1000 miles, do asearch it should still be there in the magazine archives.

Steve,

Your right.. Here is the article
http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evolongtermtests/221817/maserati_granturismo.html

To Quote "At least I’ve discovered a way of eking a few more miles out of every gallon to offset the GranTurismo’s appetite for tyres. Having flown in to Heathrow Terminal 5 at 9am on Easter Sunday when I should have arrived at 6 o’clock on Saturday evening, several inches of snow was the last thing I wanted to see, and with the roads leading away from the airport completely white, I switched the Maser’s auto gearbox to ‘Ice’ mode before setting off for home.

Joining the M25 the snowy conditions soon disappeared, but I’d forgotten all about having selected Ice mode and merrily made my way along the M40 with it still engaged. In fact it wasn’t until I was on my way to the office the next morning that I realised what I’d done – and noticed that my average mpg had risen to 24.5mpg, some 10 per cent better than I’d ever seen before.

I can’t believe the fuel saving is all down to setting off in second gear rather than first, so I can only deduce that switching to ‘Ice’ also introduces a different engine map. To make sure it wasn’t a fluke I left the mode engaged for another 1000 miles and, sure enough, the result was a steady 24mpg-plus. I don’t know if this works in other cars, but with fuel prices the way they are it might be worth a try if you carry the same meanness gene as me!"

Miss daisy mode is great in heavy traffic or low grip situations. Misses out 1st and changes up at 3.5k revs. Pop it into normal manual for overtaking and then back to ice auto for cruising. Still pretty quick mind.

Ice mode moves my consumption from 17.5 MPG to 24 MPG in a QP Sport GTS. I always put it on when I'm running very low on fuel or when cruising on a long motorway journey - it really helps.

If I go out in the 4200 in this weather, I will give it a whirl and see what I get..??

Tempted as well, though I'll try to avoid the spin ;)

I don't really have a baseline consumption yet, though. First, measured, tank went through at ~15 mpg

Had to go our in the 4200 this morning, selected "ICE" mode as it was icy. Gearbox did not select 2nd to start off, it changed as normal from 1st upwards, but changed gear at around 3K rpm. I have to assume that this is right, or does anyone know anything different about the later 4200CC..??
