I believe it was you that brought up DA and JC, just saying. ;) I agree, let who ever get on with it without petty attempted point scoring.

Yes, you're right, I saw the opportunity of a cheap shot reply to Wanderer and took it.
I regret my comment and withdraw it.
In fact, never thought I'd say it but JC did a good job in question time today about the lack of help currently for self employed people in the House PMQ.

Question about the self employed:

This isn’t a dig at anyone, so no shouting, just a genuine question.

Why is JC banging on about handouts for the self employed?

I work with a lot of self employed staff, their take home pay is roughly double what the permanent employees get. This extra is meant to cover pensions, sickness etc.

Staff in our area dealt with one suicide and 2 attempted suicides yesterday. Difficult to tell at the moment if that’s more than normal.

Political animals are not, by virtue of their very description, daft. Which is what you'd have us all believe as you simultaeneously opine the shut down of political commentary ( as if it is a black and white world) whilst calling politics daft ( again,,its all black and white, there's nothing to learn here? ) In favour of childish memes ? Or a running commentary of what the news has already told us..? There is surely room for both...
I for one, believe the world a more complex and nuanced place than a cosy forum of virtual limitation....
Errr, where did I use the words “political animals” and where did I therefore say they are “daft”? Or call politics daft? I called people (not political animals) who think that any or all of this stuff is easy daft, and I completely stand by that. What I’m in favour of is thoughtful and constructive debate and opinion. Not the reposting of shite from Facebook and Twitter, and people using this health crisis to score political points, whilst usually having nothing useful to say other than let’s just throw money at the problem without any control and irrespective of how deserving the case.......

Just seen a report on Sky News of a 21 year old with no known health issues died earlier this week of the virus.
Very sad and hopefully an eye opener for many people not taking this seriously.

There have been calls for self-employed people (like me) to 'be paid what they normally get paid' (including the usual silly and typo-filled petitions). This makes no sense on many levels.

Some self-employed people are still working more-or-less successfully from home.

There seems to me no reason why 'someone' should pay 100% of what self-employed people were previously making - surely some drop in income can be tolerated when times are hard.

And where is the money supposed to be coming from? The 'rich', as usual? It can only come from 'printing more', 'tax', 'borrowing' or 'other people'.

If the proposition is 'give self-employed people all the money now' PLUS 'tax them treble next year to pay for it' maybe we wouldn't be so keen on that.

The only fun part is that if there is to be a 'free money' handout which is based on previous tax returns; the cheats who have been taking half their money in undeclared cash will be feeling a bit sorry for themselves.

Thanks for the reply.

Are there really that many self employed people in the country that it’s top of Leader of the Opposition’s agenda?

I said exactly that on this forum Saturday...........................................

Just thinking out loud about how much money a self employed person will get in the handout. It is my understanding that it will be based on HMRC tax returns from previous years.
So those "black economy" and "do it for this amount if it's cash" self employed people who have sent in dodgy low tax returns for years are going to sh1t out.
I don't think I am missing anything am I?
Sympathy, none!

Aren't quite a lot of the zero hours and 'gig' economy classed as self employed?

C

I hadn’t thought of them. I assumed if they were on a zero hours contract they were an employee but I guess contract could mean something different in this instance.

The Gov and HRMC considers one-man Ltd's like me and I suspect lots of others here as 'self employed' which is legally not true. We are employed in the legal definition of the term.

Indeed Wanderer and don't qualify for the 80% employee assistance NOR whatever is announced for self-employed.

So a bit of a no man's land sadly.

99.9% of the work I did last year was for one organisation and a big one at that.

Some people will die from any virus , 2013 my wife had a bit of a cold while we were on holiday in cornwall , a week later she was paralysed in hospital with Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Guillain-Barré (gee-YAH-buh-RAY) syndrome is a rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. Weakness and tingling in your extremities are usually the first symptoms. These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing your whole body.

Without medical intervention she would've died , she never recovered 100%, left side of her face is paralysed and she fatigues quickly, a few die even with medical intervention regardless of age

I did hear about something similar being reported with CV19 cases , the immune system attacks the virus but doesn't distinguish between the virus and healthy cells

Technically I am employed by Experian. AS of the 31st I will technically be employed by N Other company. But since I am the MD of said, it's simpler to work PAYE at times.
